Apple has quietly added the iPod Camera Connector to its online store. In addition to making the connector available for order, this is also the first time an official photo of the device as been offered by Apple.
The iPod Camera Connector, which was announced alongside Apple’s new iPod photo lineup last month, provides the ability to easily transfer digital photos directly from your digital camera for instant viewing and slide show playback on an iPod photo.
Apple says the $29 device will ship in 1-3 weeks.

I want a way to back up my digital pictures on vacation ... and this would be the cheapest way since I already have an iPod, too bad its a 3rd gen…
I wonder if there will be a hack to make this available to us 3rd gen users, or is it a hardware limitation ?

Cool…so I assume this also means that we will soon see the much anticipated iPod Photo software update Apple has promised which enables you to select different slide show transitions?

Notice that the Apple site indicates that it is for “Compatible with iPod photo (30/40/60GB).” Doesn’t make one thing it is going to work with non-photo iPod’s. Also indicates that it will work “... for supported cameras.” Makes me wonder. That sounds pretty limiting as well.

steve and mucrick,
belkin already makes a camera connector for non-ipod photos (3g and 4g).

since the ipod photo displays photos there are a few more steps that need to be taken.. hence apple’s connector.

[sarcasm] They DO!?!?! Wow who’d have thunk it a €124,90(EUR) (Applestore), Belkin Meda Reader that can only read what the Hell it likes (you probably can forget about xD Cards’),. What a freaking bargin, when compared to a freakin Dock - USB Dongel the should work with any Camera that has Pictbridge support that’s a snip at ONLY €30.00(EUR)...
Yeah WHAT A FREAKING BARGEN!!![/sarcasm]

Why the Hell does Apple want to crap over anyone that does NOT have there latest Toy? Beit with Software Updates or something so damnd trite as this thing why not make it avalible to all the Docking iPods includeing the Mini, for that matter. I mean hay that could have / would have been €30.00(EUR) more that Apple could have squezed me for.
If anyone @ Apple Co. actully come here to read this stuff WTF were you thinking! This is not what I would expect from such an endearing Corporation such as Apple. With this kind of support I’m almost sure to switch.
NOT!!!

eh no need for sarcasm.
i was just offering up a solution in case they didn’t know about it….
its a difference of $50… big deal.
maybe this will force belkin to come out with an update/cheaper model. who knows.
no need for the attitude.

I already have the Belkin Digital Camera connector thing, but its soooooo slow, and requires external power (AA batteries).
I would imagine the Apple accessorie is faster and you don’t need to carry along extra batteries.
Thoughts ?

wow… i haven’t heard the “NOT!!” comment since the early 90’s! Thanks for the reminder.
And why does everyone have to make a big deal about a little adapter? You want photo support? GO GET THE IPOD PHOTO. And stop moaning about Apple’s lack of backward support. APPLE IS A COMPANY-NOT UNICEF. And believe it or not, its goal is to make MONEY! (wow, there’s a concept)
Yes, maybe apple should stop making iPods, and iPod accessories… That way we can all cherrish our little musical soap bars and live the glory days forever! OR maybe Apple is addressing the fact that there is something known as COMPETITION out there, and the only way to stay on top, is to keep ahead of the pack. OMG why is this concept so hard to figure out!!!! Some people are so closed minded. Those people shouldn’t have iPods, they just piss me off. GO GET A (non)CREATIVE ZEN you TROLLS!

Well I went ahead and ordered it. Hopefully it works with all USB cameras even the ones that are not Pict Bridge enabled. No big loss if it doesn’t. If it works as advertised and i can preview them on the Photo iPod (as has been suggested), this would be great when on the road.

this is a great product and all… but shouldn’t apple have built this feature directly into the iPod photo?
it seems like the iPod Photo would have been more appropriately called the iPod color, because really, a color lcd seems like the only difference… that and some software differences. please correct me if i’m wrong.

Supported cameras? Apple’s product page shows a link to the iPod photo support site but that page doesn’t list supported cameras at all. Anyone know?

Why is anybody getting mad that Apple is releasing this accessory? Wth?
Posted by minty on March 21, 2005 at 11:15 AM (PST)

Because they are giving vague information and expecting people to spend $29 without knowing if their camera will work. They were also going to release a software update in March which hasn’t shown up yet and it is getting to the end of the month.
I will order one, when it is on the UK Store.

Anyone have any idea if your transferred photos will be available immediately for view on the ipod photo?
or, will you need to use the computer to modify the photos for viewing with the ipod?

They will appear on iPod photo BUT you wont be able to put them on a TV.
