iPod designer Jonathan Ive awarded highest British design honor

“Few people recognise Jonathan Ive. Few could tell you what he does. But most of us know, admire and use his work. Ive, who has just been awarded the highest British design honour with his appointment to the RSA’s Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry, is ‘Mr Mac’. He is the British designer who has reinvented the computer, the personal stereo and much else besides. By banishing beige boxes and replacing them with sculptural, easy-to-get-to-grips-with products, such as Apple’s iMac and iPod, Ive has transformed the way we look at the electronic stuff that surrounds us.”

yeah for no other than Alessi Brand, sidenote, Michael Graves design buildings too, very post-modern.
So many good designers out there, but I do agree Jonathan Ive winning this time as his designs are more well-known and actually making a DIFFERENCE

Michael Graves’ designs for Target are terribly tacky compared to Ive’s work. It’s true that Graves’ is a Postmodernist. Postmodernism is not only tacky, but passe and insulting to consumers. The whole concept of Potmodernism is based on the idea that good design is inaccessible to the masses, neccessitating in the inclusion of elements of the local vernacular. Ive’s adds nothing so that we poor, helpless, tasteless consumers can appreciate his designs. He knows that truly good design can inspire, regardless of a consumers level of education.

Graves designs only the *outside* of the appliances for Target. The mechanisms are fairly shoddy standard Black and Decker. That’s not design, that’s decoration. The ipod integrates form and function—that’s real design.

You folks obviously haven’t seen Graves’ spatula work. The encapsulate the human spirit, the eb and flow of humanity. Not to mention the teflon coating is great for scrambled eggs!

If you want to see the design work that Graves actually puts thought into check out the Alesssi line. The Target line is a sad shoddy imitation that really cheapens his (once) good name.
