iPod marketshare dominates at 92%
MacMinute reports that Apple’s iPod is still king of the digital music world despite increasing competition, according to a new report from the NPD Group. The research company said in a report released today that various versions of the iPod account for 92.1 percent of the market for hard-drive based music players, up from 82.2 percent a year ago. NPD said Creative and Rio were a distant second and third, with 3.7 and 3.2 percent of the market, respectively.

microsoft has a 90%+ OS marketshare—doesn’t mean it’s the best choice.

And look at the new factors that are only recently starting to boost the iPod:
* iPod Minis are finally to be found regularly on store shelves
* The 4G clickwheel iPod is out
* The prices dropped $100
* The music store has hit 1M downloads, 1M-song catalog, and several new countries
* HP is selling iPods in tons of new places
(Nobody believes the iPod is a better product because it sells more. It’s the other way around. Remember that Windows got its monopoly by copying the superior Mac and leveraging the existing MS-DOS monopoly. iPod did not copy a superior product, and gained its cross-platform market share without relying on an existing monopoly.)

Hard-drive base players!!
Thats entirely believable. Include flash players and they wouldn’t even have 50%.

hey include cars, types of shoes, and digital cameras, and its most likely not even 1% !!!!
no crap when you add things to the survey the numbers will be less

Apple just announced that this 92%-of-HD number comes to 65% of ALL players. (That’s in units, so in dollars Apple’s share is much greater: flash players are the cheap ones.) That means of the overall player market at present you have about:
* 65% iPods
* 5% other HD players
* 30% flash players
BTW, doing a little rough math on that… since iPods hold SO much more than flash players, I estimate that about 99% of the MUSIC STORAGE currently sold is on iPods—and ready for iTMS.
That means ALL the other music stores combined are fighting over 1% of the storage space. They’re selling downloads almost entirely to people who bought cheap flash players. (Not the most lucrative market?)

I like my 3G/20, but I wouldn’t buy the 4G with the clicker. When I’m in the car, the dock sits on the dash and clicking would probably push it away. I was disappointed to see that as an improvement. The greatest opportunity for competition is when one company has such a large market share, but it seems to me that the music side really isn’t much of an earner. So if Virgin or MS want to play, they need a cooler product. Very few companies can do “cool”. I think that Apple needs to license the DRM though, or they will simply alienate some consumers.

Or M$ could do us the End-Users a favor and just licence the Fair-Play DRM.
And I’m just as Windows minded as the next guy! IE6.0 and all….

Ichijoe,
I thought Apple wouldn’t let anyone license fairplay. Doesn’t apple own the technology behind fairplay drm?

Ninety-two percent.
All of the Applehaters and competitors who last year said Apple couldn’t maintain a 60% share of hard-drive based music players were right.
Ninety-two percent.
D-d-damn, Steve!!!
