iPod shuffle clone ‘worse than you could believe’

imageAn iLounge reader in Taiwan recently purchased the Luxpro Super Tangent and provided us with his observations of the iPod shuffle clone as well as a photo gallery of the device and its packaging.

The iLounger said the Super Tangent is “worse than you could believe” and that “every detail is wrong.” He said the player cost about US$115 and that the buttons do not work well, battery life is “terrible,” and the recorder simply did not record. The reader also said that the LEDs do not shine through the casing properly, and that it doesn’t fit well in a USB port. “There is nothing that works even close to right,” he said.

Update: Phillip Torrone of Make magazine let us know that he had a little better luck with the Super Tangent he purchased. He has posted a review and several photos of the device, including comparison shots beside the iPod shuffle.

Dennis Lloyd, I agree that iPodLounge didn’t review the Super Tangent clone,

but the thing is that reviewer in Tawain is a fanboy with that over critical review, considering the updated reviewer had luck with the product.

I don’t think it’s a matter of people getting lucky or not with the Tangent, they are all the same thing.

So I’m keeping an open mind and don’t really buy the first readers over exaggerated, I-love-apple-and-hate-the competition-review.

“More precisely, this lack of quality, overall cheapness and absence of any semblance of workmanship, is typical of Taiwanese/Chinese made trash like this.

Crap seems to be the hallmark of the quick buck sleezoids from China. Funny how, for a communist country, they’re so inundated with fly-by-night profiteer types.”

After that, and you’re wondering how people have come to the conclusion that you’re China-bashing?

Dennis Lloyd:

Bending the truth?  No.  But delivering a slanted and biased headline?  Dan Rather and CBS News couldn’t have done it any better.

Posted by flatline response on June 3, 2005 at 4:08 AM (CDT)

What is it about some of you just can’t understand. Maybe English is not your primary language.

This trash could be made anywhere…in any country. But, the fact of the matter is, most if it is made in TAIWAN and CHINA.
I’ve never said anything like, “The Taiwanese people are all bunch of crooks.” or “All the Chinese do are rip off others to make money for themselves.” I am not now, nor have I ever been bashing the Taiwanese or Chinese peoples.

But, on the other hand, you cannot honestly defend these thieving companies whose crappy products come from those GEOGRAPHIC locations by trying to hide behind the “shield” of calling someone a “China-basher” or “Taiwan-basher” when all they are doing is pointing out the obvious truth of these criminals’ activities.

Calling someone a China basher or Taiwan basher is side-stepping the issue. It draws attention away from the topic of these ripoff artists and it draws some people to your “side” because calling someone a “China basher” or “Taiwan basher” stirs up emotions. All you are doing is ignoring what is really being said here, that these people like Luxpro are nothing more than common thieves. It is an attempt to defend their criminal activity by diverting attention away from the central facts and trying to make it a racial issue. And, it is not.

Again, any intelligent person will see right through what you and all others who claim some of us are “dissing” or “bashing” China or Taiwan, are really doing.

I’d be interested to know what you’d be saying if knockoffs/ripoffs of something originally designed, created and manufactured in China or Taiwan were being ripped off the way people like Luxpro have by people in another county, like the U.S., Canada or some European country.

This is all about the criminal activities of companies and individuals like Luxpro. Don’t try to deflect the truth by wrongly accusing others of something that is not happening and trying to make it a racial issue.

And, yes, though you and some others here don’t want to admit it and again are sidestepping the fact that crappy knockoffs like this Tangent garbage should not be allowed to be sold, Dennis Lloyd is very accurate. The headline reflected the opinions of a review that was quoted. ipodlounge also posted an update with an opposite opinion as well. So, YES, it is fair. It is only slanted to those who seem to have a need to defend either these thieves or their geographic homeland.

I cant even believe that iPodlounge would put this sh!t that a 4th grader wrote as “news”.  the person that wrote this doesnt even provide basic proof to back up his statements.

This thing is not even $115. People sell them on eBay at a extremely high price to scam your money.  This product is probably $50 USD at most

Jinzo, old boy…

Perhaps YOU should be the one who invests in proper English writing courses.

Your meglomaniacal, sophmoric tirades are so jaded that you can’t even recognize the slants you infest them with.  You don’t see how your own poor writing not only does not single out fly-by-night operations who seek to cash in on Apple’s success, but makes generalizations about the nations these people call their home.

Instead, you clamor about being the apologist, saying how your poor excuse and execution for typing and thinking at the same time ISN’T about about stompin’ down the Chinese (Red or not). Perhaps not, but anyone with an open mind wouldn’t necessarily see it your way.

Why don’t you offer PROOF that “a great many of the companies in those fields are there to make a quick buck by STEALING the ideas and R&D investments of other companies by reverse engineering other people’s products, then making a cheaper (in both quality and function) version and flood the market with their sub-standard crap and prices far below the real deal” (your own words thrown back in your face).  You cite Luxpro as one of these…that’s it?  It’s not even compatible with iTunes, AAC or ANYTHING Apple.  Hell, their gear looks less and less like anything Cupercino designs with each subsequent product.  That’s your GREAT MANY?  You make wide generalizations that *imply* most Chinese are out to scame a buck, but then offer no specifics aside from a single company.  Then when people read between you inflammatory lines (which evidently you can’t recognize yourself), all we instead are treated with is apologistic backpedaling, and claims that anyone who CAN’T SEE in you musings what you “really” meant is less-than-worthy of being in your company (not that we’d want to anyways, but that’s beside the point), since we are not gifted with intellect enough to understand poor, pitiful you.

Tell me, oh-vaunted-but-so-SO-limited one, given the evidence your “illuminating” posts have provided to date, I have to ask why SHOULDN’T anyone buy this garbage?  Other than accusing any of us who see your rants as anything BUT intelligent, you’ve bring nothing to the table other than what self-sactimonious and self-serving prattlings that reside in that brain of yours.

You want to know my “slant”?  Well, to spare you whatever limited brain cells you have left trying to and erroneously figuring that out on your own, I’ll tell you.  I believe that the marketplace will determine the winners and losers.  I believe that people, given time to decipher the proper knowledge and info, will see through the fakes and garbage for what they are.  Those who can’t deserve what they get.  I certainly don’t believe that ANYONE needs a higher power going around shutting these fly-by-nights down simply because YOU rant that they’re evil.

All that can be said is you write and think like a kid.  You instantly THINK the racism card when all I see is the rantings of some sorry fool who doesn’t have the skills to even see the nationalistic flamebait his own words incite.  Writing, your forte it is not.

Add a few years, then come back and take me on…if I haven’t died from old age waiting for you to grow up first.

So, jinzo…how’s my frickin’ English now?

Posted by flatline response on June 6, 2005 at 3:31 AM (CDT)

And finally Jinzo,

...and as for the headline…

No, it is NOT fair, but not for the reasons your evidently limited capacity would think.  Anyone who glances at that headline has NO CLUE that it’s NOT an opinion of ipodlounge.  Only after actually reading the story and related links does a reader figure out WHO actually said what that headline states.  So WHY is that bad?  People who don’t follow through and read the article get what they deserve?

Well, no they don’t.  A RESPONSIBLE news service would understand that people are lazy and/or in a hurry, and often will accept a headline as a truth without fully understanding or reading the actual story.  A responsible headline editor would know that such headline appear on a site or newpaper that people TRUST as truthful and factual.  There’s no indicator that the opinion of the “Shuffle clone” was from ipodlounge.  But there’s no indicator that it WASN’T, either.  So, since it appeared on ipodlounge, it IS NOT a stretch for someone to assume that ipodlounge was the originator of that opinion.  So the ‘fairness’ of the headline is not about whether the Tangent is crap, but about how TRUSTED the source of this ‘i’pinion IS.

Understand, now?

“Your meglomaniacal, sophmoric tirades are so jaded that you can’t even recognize the slants you infest them with”

That’s long?  I didn’t think so, but sorry about the length if you feel it’s too much to handle at one reading…jinzo started with the insults, and being the sun-deprived individual I am I just didn’t want to let it go without some response.

Posted by flatline response on June 6, 2005 at 4:54 PM (CDT)

Long? Yes. It took you 2 posts, and over 20mins to write!?!

Anyway…if you have the time, good on ya!

Why diss super tangent as an asian ripfoff/knock off/etc when ipod shuffle itself is also made in china as well?
Instead, try to console urself that u had paid more for a less functional mp3 player (ie. ipod shuffle). Thats right, you have been ripped off by Apple.
IMHO, Super Tangent is a far more superior player than ips, in terms of functionability, if not performance as well.
By the way, the buttons do not work as badly as reviewed at all, its something called an autolock function. Obviously the reviewer is oblivious to this function.

I got one myself when I was in Taiwan… Here’s the review - I was pretty surprised because at first sight you think it’s a rip-off.  In legal terms, it’s not. There’s nothing Apple can do about it. In fact, this device is way better than the iPod… if you compare it closely: The navigation buttons are different, Internal electronics different, earplugs and connector different… And it does not need a lanyard (The earphones have an integrated one, cool) in fact the only similariry is the beveled edges and the products coloring and shinyness. As for the coolness factor, I can play ordinary MP3 files (Shuffle can’t), The control buttons light up in the dark (looks super cool), and I don’t need iTunes (nice for those of us with a large amount of MP3 files).  There’s no rip-off really. That they have taken advantage of a form factor that people like, YES, that they copied Apple, Perhaps (but then, they made sure to do it in a Legal way) think about mice for example, microsoft or logitech, they’re pretty similar. Or think about software… I’m using Firefox now and I’m really not thinking that they’ve copied Internet Explorer or Netscape… It looks the same, yes, but it packs more features and is totally different internally.  BTW, I got a refund for that Shuffle I tried first… Then it was great finding the Tangent and paying less for it (got it for 70bucks) Cheers.
