iPod World Flags Photo Contest

We love contests, especially the ones for our Buyers’ Guides. So we’re very excited to announce the first of two new contests today, with the second to be announced on August 15, 2005 in our new Back to School / iPod 101 Guide.
This is the iPod World Flags Contest, with simple rules and major prizes. Three people will win fantastic goodies for their photo entries, and as in the past, we will announce winners and publish all of our favorite entries in the new Guide.
Criteria
Submit an original digital photograph of any iPod and the flag of your country of residence. You can do anything you want to dress up the photograph beyond that, so be creative! We anticipate that there will be many entries from certain countries, so your photograph will stand out from the rest if you give it some thought. Entries will be judged on composition, creativity, and overall photographic merit.
How to Enter
Submit your photos to our new iPod World Flags Photo Gallery.
- Photo size for submission: 640 x 480 pixels (horizontal/vertical)
- Important: Please include your email address and country of origin when uploading photos.
- Super Important: Winners MUST submit full-sized images of 1600x1200 or greater size immediately on request of iLounge.
To prevent cheating, a prize winner may only have his or her prize shipped to the country identified by the flag in the winning photograph. No Photoshopping or other photo editing is allowed, except for color/contrast correction. For obvious reasons, this contest is open to all of our international readers as well as those in the United States.
Prizes
Grand Prize: Apple Mac mini computer and a set of Shure E5c headphones (combined MSRP, approx. $1000).
Second Place: One set of Shure E4c earphones (MSRP $299) plus a $25 iTunes Gift Card.
Third Place: One random winner from all valid entries receives a set of new Shure E3c earphones (retail value $179). Winner chosen by electronic random drawing.
Special thanks to Shure for sponsoring this contest!

I dont understand:“You can do anything you want to dress up the photograph beyond that.” but “No Photoshopping or other photo editing is allowed”......so i can or cant use any photoimage software like photoshop or any other photoediting software???.....Thanks.

Daniele,
Its pretty easy. You cant use photoshop other than color correction. You CAN dress up your photo by coming up with a creative layout and then take a photo of it. So take a cool picture, and you got a chance!

What about state flags? Here in Australia each state has its own flag too - could the photo be of that?

What about including your flag of residence AND your flag of like heritage…both, is that allowed? Also, what about including your iPod and your flag of residence and say for example my mother’s iPod and her flag…is that allowed? Thanks.

it means… u take a photo, and u can edit the contrast and brightness but that is it. With photoshop u can create magic if you know what u are doing. hope that helps

To me, it means that pictures cannot be manipulated in any way other than resizing and contrast/btightness adjustments. Do not believe you can use layers on this contest.
Other thing, rules clearly state that the flags need to be made of fabric, which doesn´t seem to be the case in some of these submissions.

I noticed that about the fabric flag requirement, also that a number of submissions have exceeded the posted file size limit.

Don’t worry, Jack has been more than compensated in peanuts.

naa… something beyond peanuts.. i’ve been thinking of an orange ilounge tuxedo for him!

An orange tux, ruffled shirt and shiny white spats!
How about a raver outfit with goggles and glowsticks? Or maybe go all-out and release his inner flamingo with some pink hairspray? Poor Jack will do ANYthing for a peanut.

Question about the sending of 1600x1200 imagery. At what date would this take place? Before the publishing of the Back to School guide, or afterwards.
And what is the time limit for sending this bigger image in. For example, if you were away for the weekend, would that matter?

Why do people rate good images so low? Hasn’t everyone figured out that the ratings do not decide the winner. Lets start giving good photos better than like a 1 out of 5. I guess envy gives out bad ratings.

a raver outfit.. hehe…
well lupinIII, it’s often going this way: for example: “nice colors, good contrast, but that guy looks g*y.. 1 star.” “oh, nice picture, but I HATE THAT COUNTRY!” “Oh, that’s a cute girl, but i want my picture to win!”
i would recomment ilounge to add a comment box for each photo and drop the rating system for the pictures submitted for contests. so that the people can discuss the pictures and you can say what they could have done better or what they could change to make their pictures more successful.
And yes it’s mostly envy but even more malevolence going on. It’s just the thing like “i want the people to look at my picture because it’s the best”... But that’s a natural habbit of the human race, unfortunately…
however… many people take contests on the internet a bit too serious (not just this contest, i’ve been spending some horrible time at a canon photocontest website where the people are really sitting 24/7 in front of their screens, waiting for new pictures to be submitted, and just 1 day after submitting your picture, you’re picture got rated 2 out of 10 stars by 7 people that are telling you that your picture is ABSOLUTE crap, though it’s adored by my profs at the university, who should know about photography. And the more ironic thing of that story is that my picture actually made it to the first place)
don’t know how it’s up to you but taking pictures with an actual aim is more like a challenge, and i do it for ME to gain experience.
However, anna and i had fun in our hotel in madrid (pictures where actually taken at 4:50am, so i hope the jumping didn’t wake up the other guests). In my opinion, that’s what these contests should be about: fun!

*Looks at some entries, sigh* Even if I were to win I would have no girl to wrap in a flag and celebrate with.
