iPodMods plans to introduce a new line of clear replacement cases for iPods. As first shown in the iLounge 2007 iPod Buyers’ Guide today, the iVue Crystal Cases replace the iPod’s original front casing with a clear version that reveals the internal components and circuitry. Clear shells will be available for fourth- and fifth-generation iPods and iPod nanos within the next two months, with iPod mini shells expected at a later date. Multiple translucent colors will also be available. iPodMods said it will charge $30 with free installation for the replacement shells. For further info on this product and a plethora of other new iPod accessories, be sure to check out our 2007 iPod Buyers’ Guide.

that is awesome. So, so awesome. I guess they won’t ship to New Zealand though. (sigh)

Can’t wait to see what the ones in translucent colors look like.

Clearly an option that Apple should have offered from the beginning. Glad to see someone was smart enough to do it.

that’s crazy. i wonder if it’s any more scratch-resistant than the original casing. i should hope so since it’s clear. i wonder how it would look with a clear hard case on it.
not a bad price as well. i’m actually considering trying this.

“Clearly an option that Apple should have offered from the beginning.”
Ugh. I think I’m gonna puke.
Neat mod though. Now all it needs is some neon. Or a length of fiber optic cabling.

Clear gadgets never go out of style *g*
I’m with Papa Hobo on the scratch issue. They should have it made scratch proof. Please!

Reminds me of the cleartone phones in the eighties. Interesting idea, but for my taste the interior of the iPod just doesn’t seem all that interesting to look at.

why couldnt you just spraypain the inside of the shell, making it whatever color you wanted. or even do a design.

Glow in the dark paint inside the shell would be amusing…...

i’m thinking just a color on the inside would be a little pointless. you may as well just buy a newer colored ipod. i think SouthernGothic has a good idea with a glowing ipod.
i really like the way the clickwheel looks. maybe just a black casing with clear clickwheel would look good. the copperish metallic orange is pretty cool.

I hear this alot, scratchproof. Tell me, what clear material is scratchproof and how is it cost-effective to implement?

I really like the idea of a black casing with a clear clickwheel. Good suggestion Papa Hobo.

Alright, I’ve been modding ipods for years, and have attempted (aka not finished) to fabricate a clear faceplate for the video ipods, just because they are easier. I was hand making one out of plexi, and it’s actually pretty nice. What I want to know is what kind of plastic is being used here? Is it the same stuff used on cd jewel cases? Because if so, that would break really easily. I want something that could with stand a drop, something as strong as the original faceplates.

proanim8r, ever heard of glass?
Granted, it wouldn’t be the best idea for a portable device (Read: drops) but it’s clear, virtually scratchproof and not overly costly.

Hi!
Months ago I had the same idea for my adhesive skins for the iPod Video and iPod nano. Look here for the 5G: http://macbase.de/shuffleskins/site/5g_main/5g_diverse/5g_diverse.html
and here for the nano: http://macbase.de/shuffleskins/site/nano_main/nano_diverse/nano_diverse.html
Greetings from Germany!
