If you’re closing iPods Around the World (even temporarily) I suggest you remove the section from the top of the main page as well.
Every time you visit iPodlounge a new thumbnail is still loaded. When I checked the properties of the last image, it was 26k. So, even though the main section is closed, a lot of bandwidth is being used up just to support the “preview” section at the top of the main page.
Just my $.02 on the situation.

It is only a temporary shut down and solution to alleviate the current situation, so the promo at top will remain. The gallery has photos ranging from 50K to 150K at 640x480, so it uses a lot of bandwidth. Thanks for your suggestion, though.

Why woould banner ads be a problem?
First they generate revenue. Maybe not much, but every penny helps.
Second, most banners are remotely hosted, which means iPodlounge doesn’t get hit with the bandwidth used to load them. This site probably just serves the code for the banner to be displayed, and not the actual banner.
Keep in mind this is a speculation and I actually have no idea how iPodlounge is configured.

Yeah Rich, you have a point but this site does actually host the images for all the ads but seeing as they do generate revenue and also are small in size they don’t need to be moved and iPodlounger already said that its only the mass visitors who look at the photos that is taking all the bandwidth up,

If iPods Around the World is so busy…why dont you put a couple ads on that section to help pay for the bandwith?

Ian, you’re absolutely right. We are currently seeking an exclusive sponsor for the iPods Around the World photo gallery.

Have you tried to contact any of the makers of digital cameras or digital imaging software? I can see the ads in my mind right now from Ricoh or Canon or HP.

or post a link where those who can’t live without it, and don’t want to see the banner ads, can donate money for the site’s upkeep.

Or make a deal with your ISP for them to sponsor the pages in exchange for the bandwidth. And free publicity in an article about how they stepped in to save the Around the World galleries!

Talk about UNGRATEFUL. Quit complaining, I’m sure they are working on getting it fixed as soon as they have a solution for the situation.
How much are you paying to read the forums and be a part of the community on this website? NOTHING you say? Well then, have patience.
