Is your iPhone 3G having headphone port problems?
During our continued testing of two iPhone 3Gs, we discovered last night that one of our units has a troubled headphone port; unlike our original iPhone and another iPhone 3G, unplugging the included Stereo Headset from the port mid-telephone call results 50% or more of the time in a disconnected call. Since many of you have units already, we’d like to ask in advance of our review: is this happening to your iPhone 3G? Please post in the comments below; we’d like to know how isolated this is. Thanks!

My 3g Black 16gb does have the problem. Every time I disconnect headphones the call is dropped. Tried several different headphones (Apple, Sony, Grado, extension cable).

Anybody having an issue with non-apple headphones and just stereo plugs in general, where the iPhone constantly pauses, as if it doesn’t have a secure connection even though its in as far as it can go? I’m wondering if this is limited to my iPhone or not. I was even able to get it to happen once with old iPod headphones that don’t have the third ring for the mic.

black 3g 8gb - I find my headset very sensitive to movement, sound stops coming out of the headset and through the speakers at the slightest touch. Have tried various headsets all the same.

I’ve now seen an issue with iPhone 3G where plugging in the headset causes the iPod to start playing. One phone of mine does this and the other does not. I had the problem with my old iPhone 1.0 being stuck in headphone mode a lot.

Hi. I have the first version of the 8GB iPhone, and the headphone problem started after I did the 2.0 upgrade. It never happened before, so I’m pretty sure there’s a bug on the 2.0 OS.

I’m having the issue as well. I’m also having an issue where my iPod app starts playing after I’ve paused it. Not sure if it’s headphone related or not. Has anyone else experienced this?

Weird. i’ve had issues where my headphones, when ejected, still think the headphones are in. it’s very intermittent, but extremely annoying… this is even BEFORE the 2.0 update. however, the 2.0 update fixed it. now that i have upgraded to the 3G, i never have that issue anymore (knock on wood).

Call me crazy, but why is everyone unplugging their headphones mid call? When you unplug a regular iPod, it pauses the song, so it really doesn’t seem that mysterious that it drops the call.

It never happened with my 1st Gen iPhone, but it’s happening with my 3G. Very annoying.
@marioj - When you are on a call and you plug-in your headphones, why should the call disconnect? Yes, it is mysterious, especially since it didn’t happen with my first gen iPhone.

You plug or unplug mid-call to change the way you are communicating. You pick up a call and later decide to use the earphone or remove the earphone.

I too am having this problem, yet Apple has not seemed to acknowledge it. I found a thread on support.apple.com about it documenting it very well but they, last I checked, did not respond.
I’ve tried 4 different headphones as well as 3.5mm to RCA cables (for stereo hookup) and the only ones that seem to not have the problem is the included earbuds, which suck compared to my Shures.
In any case, it seemed to do with the fact that the headphone port is not a 4-lead type instead of the 3 lead type…the 4th lead being used for the built in button on the 3g earbuds. As a result, I ordered some 4-lead adapters on Amazon and just tested, and the problem persists using headphones with a 3-lead connection.
My precise problem is this..
Plugging in headphones automatically starts playback of iPod “Now Playing”. Then it randomly stops and starts again. If I steam an mp3 via the quicktime player from Safari, the iPod will also random interrupt and start and stop playing, consistently. This also happens with Apps that are audio based such as Beatmaker.

I’m experiencing the same problems as Jonathan Feldman on July 15, 2008 and John on August 20, 2008.
I’m using Bose Quietcomfort 3 noise cancelling headphones with a black 16GB iphone 3G. I get intermittent pausing of the ipod track i’m playing…It resumes after a few seconds but keeps happening. The iphone is a replacement one (the first phone had to be replaced after a bug where itunes was unable to restore it due to Unexpected Error #6). I only had the first phone for about a week but it don’t recall it having the headphone problem.
This replacement has had upgrades 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 applied but the problem persists.
The Apple bud phones work perfectly and never pause a track
Apple are communicating with me (here in Australia) but I am yet to here what will happen. Can any of you out there also try 3rd party phones of any kind and notice the same thing ?

My problem is a little different that urs, I just got the 3G iphone and I wasn’t able to use the ear piece, when I connect it, it doesn’t go all the way in. It’s like the end part of the earphones is bigger than the port…..I dont know what’s going on….

Apple iPhone 3G 8GB Black, when I plug in my original Apple headphones - the white ones, with the mic on the right - during a call it will disconnect the call. When not on a call, it starts playing a song automatically.
I’m on the phone with Apple Support. Here’s what they say:
Sync your iPhone from New, not from backup. If that doesn’t work, it’s a short.
I don’t know if I want to go through that headache again and resetup all my email accounts, phone settings, have to sync everything again, etc…!

I’ve never used headphones in my 3g iphone, but still, it goes into headphone mode after I’ve used various apps! Then, nobody can hear you when you make a call. Has anybody else experienced this problem?
I either call my voicemail or reset by pressing the home and top button to cure it, but it’s annoying, to say the least

I have just upgrade my 3G Software from version 2.1 to 3.0 and I have notice that the remote from my headphone is not responding. I can’t answer the incoming calls, skip, pause and play music. How can I resolve the problem.

Well, heck. My new 32GB 3GS (black) has a headphone jack that is kinda loose and poppy. I can’t stand up and walk around the room, much less exercise vigorously, while listening to songs because the connection is so weak and loose that it makes crackles and pops when I move the iPhone even a little bit while the headphone is plugged in (e.g. laying the iPhone down on the desk and just scooting it a half-inch with my finger makes the music stutter and pop.)
The headphone connector also comes unplugged when you barely touch it. Hmmmm. Thanks guys for sharing your experiences here for me to read.
Back to the store. I bought it three days ago and I can’t put up with this.
