iLounge has received an exclusive, advanced press release from iSkin, Inc. announcing their new iSkin mini silicone case for the iPod mini. The iSkin mini features “goose bump” gripping on each side, the new plastic rotary RevoClip, rear pores for heat dissipation, screen protector, integrated docking port cover, anti-slip surface, hand and neck straps (sold separately), and will be available in a variety of colors including the new ultra-Glo glow in dark skin tones. The iSkin mini is also compatible with iTrip or similar devices connecting to the top of the mini via the headphone port. I have an iSkin for my 2g 20 gig and I absolutley love it. However, IMHO, I don’t see the need for a mini case. My mini likes going naked - it was designed for that.

I hope they release the belt clip as a standalone product. The removable metal clip that came with my Exo2 is far from usable. It falls off too easily if I dont use the lanyard, and it’s already bent open from a few times of use.

I agree that the mini looks good naked…I wish they had a screen protector though…

“rear pores for heat dissipation”,
Why do you need it if the mini is a flash based AAC/MP3 player.

The mini is not flash based. It uses a 4GB *microdrive,* which is a *real* hard drive in the CF form factor.

You want good airflow around an iPod Mini at all times. One technique that microdrives use to reduce their size is that their drive mechanism is vented (larger hard derives are sealed).
So they rely on on a specific temperature and pressure of ambient atmosphere to create the cushion between the disk surface and the read/write heads.
That is why you shouldn’t operate an iPod Mini above 3000m (9000’) without pressurization, or outside its specified temperature range. I would be wary of any cases that did not provide airflow and thermal regulation.
http://www.steves-digicams.com/microdrive.html
“At high altitude the air bearings begin to loose support from the air molecules needed to provide the “air bearing” for the Negative Air Bearing Surface (NABS) design of the head. If this “air bearing” is removed or lowered (as is the case with low density air at high altitudes) the head damages the media and you could have loss of data.”
“The OEM Functional specification defines the warranty range for operating altitude as 3,000 M or 9,000 ft (3ft/M). If the customer is mountain climbing with a GPS or digital camera above 9,000 ft the drive might have problems. (Mt Fuji ~ +13,000ft, Mt Raineer ~ +14,000 ft).”

There’s been alot of talk about overheating iPods. I’ve never seen any amout of heat coming off my covered iPod. Since I don’t synch my iPod everytime I plug it in to my Mac I don’t even get it warm (iPod hard drive runs alot if resynching alot of music when iPods plugged into computer). Operating my iPod with my iSkin Exo 2 never is a problem heat-wise.

that is some seriously purple haze right there . . .
a screen protector is a must, the belt clip looks flimsy.
you guys who talk about your ‘nude minis’ being so sturdy clearly aren’t active. my mini goes everywhere so far and it is not sturdy. it is extremely delicate. drop that thing on pavement from hip height one summer day and watch the glued-on plastic ends pop off.
so enough with bashing cases, please. the thing has an inch-wide exposed female port! don’t expect me to take it to the gym just the way it is and somehow think its aura of elite freshness will keep it safe.

Mine is also naked, it shows its true beauty :D I wouldnt like to hide the beauty of the iPod mini, nice silver anodize aluminum outer shell. I just put a fix pin and a rivet clip (see rivetonline.com or you can find cheap rivet kits on ebay).

I’m hoping BoxWave will have a screen protector for the mini soon. Pricey, but worth it (IMO).
