Er, daap doesn’t have anything to do with the Music Store, or protected AACs.

All this does- if it works, and I haven’t tried it yet, but I had compilation problems with the previous version- is let you connect to a local iTunes 4.5 “shared library” with a Linux client. In theory, you could connect to a shared library over the Internet, but since nobody publishes lists of servers any more, what’s the point?

Even if you can connect to a server, you can’t stream (or download- there’s nothing to stop that, I suppose) protected AACs.

No surprises. All DRM is crap.
Software is software. In the softwarew orld if there is a will there is a way. Nothing Jobs and Co comes out with will be uncrackable as long as the service is popular enough to actually be a target. Jobs probably doesn’t realize this because no one really focuses on Mac’s. Because no one really cares.

Such intelligent commentary.

Apparently:

1. Nobody cares about Macs.
2. Therefore nobody cares about iTunes.
3. Therefore somebody figured out how to fake the new iTunes authentication.
4. Therefore Steve Jobs makes bad products.
5. Therefore nobody cares about Macs?

I’m guessing about that last part… makes a tidy loop.

Well… realize that iTunes is not just for Macs. Its also for windows, and it is in the fact that its for both platforms that its significant.

It is the only application I know that does seamless sharing between macs and pc’s. Even if nobody cares about macs, iTunes is still significant elsewhere.

Big deal and who cares (exept maybe Linex users). Really, this accomplishes nothing you can’t do by simply copying your music files to another computer. It doesn’t go outside your network and it doesn’t decode DRM AAC files. It is certainly nothing worth the level of self-congratulatory bragging the hacker seems to effuse. And certainly not worthy of all the attention the media is giving it. It reminds me of the utter joy anti-Mac folks had a few weeks back in the “discovery” of the first OS X virus (which wasn’t even a virus and was a really lame trojan horse at best).
