iTunes celebrates one year anniversary; Over 70 million songs purchased

“Apple® today celebrates the first anniversary of its iTunes® Music Store. Launched one year ago today, the iTunes Music Store has revolutionized the music industry with its 99 cents-per-song pricing, free previews, one-click purchasing and downloading, and groundbreaking personal use rights. In its first year, music fans have purchased more than 70 million songs, making it the number one online music service in the world with more than 70 percent market share of legal downloads for singles and albums. iTunes customers are currently purchasing 2.7 million songs per week, a rate of 140 million songs per year.”

Indeed… These are superb numbers.
Let’s hope the main media sees it that way and not as “Apple iTunes misses 100 Million-song Goal.”

What about those new numbers that show current monthly sales of WMA tunes have surpassed current monthly Apple sales?
Walmart (!) is a running a close second to Apple in ongoing numbers of tracks downloaded, and added with Napster and BuyMusic their total exceeds Apple’s
I hope they don’t lose their early lead but this seems to be the pattern of everything Apple does.

You might note that while the Apple Music Store is open to both Mac and PC users, Wal-Mart locks out all Mac users from downloading any of their songs, and all iPods from playing any their songs. Now who is playing fair here?
