iTunes Music Store offers prepaid card redemption

picIn a recent news story we mentioned that Target will have gift (prepaid) cards available starting this Sunday, February 15. Readers have commented that some Target stores are already selling them, and we suspect that other department stores will offer them as well. Apple has updated the iTunes Music Store with a new section to redeem prepaid cards and Terms & Conditions. Prepaid cards expire two years from date of issuance with exceptions in some states. Redemption codes appear on the back of prepaid cards. iTunes 4 (free download) or later and an iTunes Music Store account is required.

If you get a pre-paid card, scratch off the back, and enter the number you just got from the part you scratched off- you can now create an account (in the box that pops up) with an option of NONE where you usually HAVE to choose a credit card. I know it works.. because I just did it!

I know.. you need a to creat an account if you want all the free stuff.. which requires a credit card if you don’t have the pre-paid cards or an account :(

This is a very old story, but the short answer is that with a pre-paid gift card or gift certificate, you do not require a credit card to set up an iTunes Store account.

Just go to the iTunes Store, without signing in, and look for the Redeem link on the right-hand side.  Click on that and you will be asked to enter your gift card/certificate number, and will then be taken through the process of setting up an account.  It will prompt for payment information, but you will have the ability to select “None” as an option.

Once you’ve finished setting up the account, your gift card/certificate balance will be applied as a credit on the account.

The only real downside is that since most gift cards are even dollar values, and most purchases are generally a penny or two less, you’ll rarely be able to spend the entire value of a gift card (ie, a $25 gift card would allow you to buy 25 individual songs at $0.99, but you’d end up with $0.25 left on the account and would need to add another gift card or use another payment method for the difference).
