Apple has announced that iTunes is now the second-largest music retailer in the US, trailing only Wal-Mart, according to the latest data from the NPD Group. The NPD Group’s MusicWatch survey captures consumer reported past week unit purchases and counts one CD as representing 12 tracks. Apple also announced that there are now over 50 million iTunes Store customers. “We’d like to thank the over 50 million music lovers who have helped the iTunes Store reach this incredible milestone,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We continue to add great new features like iTunes Movie Rentals to give our customers even more reason to love iTunes.” iTunes has sold more than four billion songs, and offers the world’s largest music catalog of over six million songs.

I’ve only purchased a handful of tracks. I prefer CDs, but I’m waiting for the rest of the labels to go DRM-free.

i find this stat. hard to believe. wal-mart ahead of amazon? no tax and free shipping at amazon. plus, amazon doesn’t censor their selection of music.

This stat is not hard to beleive. In the amount of time it takes to buy 1 solid CD from Walmart or Amazon- iTunes can sell 3 digitally. Plus- never underestimate the power of instant gratification. I love having my music NOW- whether it is DRM free or not. I’m not alone… the only other source I have purchased music from is eBay and those were for out of print- rare CD’s - If iTunes has it- I’m buying it from them, and I’m not alone. Long live iTunes.

the stat may be hard to believe for people like us but Wal-Marts are everywhere and people without iPods or mp3 players only buy CDs. Let alone the fact that many Wal-Marts near me have a very large Latino music section, and many Latinos (or mostly Mexicans here) do not have computers.
