Certain stores get preference. I was at the San Fransico store Saturday and they had about 25 iPod mini’s in stock. They also said they would be gone by the end of the day.

Izo…
Don’t know where you get your info. in Tokyo as we speak and everywhere I checked gave no difinitive answer about delivery time..BIC, Yodobashi. When the Apple Store in Ginza said they could not tell me delivery time, despite having dozens on display, I ordered from Apple online. Status is shipment 9/24.

I don’t see the big deal here…..
I waited 5 weeks for mine from Apple back in April/May.

The big deal is the machines opened with a splash here and they are advertising the hell out of them. Maybe a little goofy, but I found myself getting more and more frustrated as I walked in to stores that only one week earlier were advertising that the iPods were coming, then to see them absolutely dolled up….massive displays, dozens of machines to try, but not a one to buy and then the line “we really have no clue when we will get another shipment.” The silver lining: no empty promises, just vacant stares.
Apple dropped the ball on this one, obviously worldwide if people were waiting weeks even in the States for these little beasties. This is similar to vaporware in the software biz. And while one could say, “gee, it’s not their fault…blah blah blah” the reality is it is their job and business to get it right.
Unlike some I will wait and hope it will be worth it. I am not a Machead by any stretch of the imagination. As a matter of fact, this will be the first Apple product I will have personally owned…ever. I am switching from another similar product with the realization that I am getting a compromise: better UI for less storage space (wma gets more bang for the Gig) The only thing that is helping is that at least here in Tokyo, the rep I dealt with on the phone was pleasant, and helpful. It remains to be seen if that will continue as my patience wears thin. Fingers crossed.

I think Izo is seeing the signs selling the iPod mini but noticing the often smaller sign that says ‘yoyaku-machi’ which means order and wait until moon turns blue.
All the stores are ‘selling’ them but none of them have them on hand.
I ordered mine from Apple.com about 2 weeks before the 7/24 release date. Came two days later
By the way, I live in Kobe, Japan.

Sorry, made a mistake in my last post. Should say ‘NOT noticing the often smaller sign…’

I agree with Terrandabo.
I live in Kobe also and I work at Osaka, so I shop around at Yodobashi often (isn’t it a great place?) Anyway, I stopped at Yodobasi yesterday and, yes they “show” you mini in all color line-up, but they say that you have to reserve them.
My boss’s wife ordered one of them early this month and as far as I know, she is not getting it yet.

Thanks for the update from “out West” in Kobe. I’ll be over in Osaka next week, likely for a meeting.
Yeah, everytime I went in a store and finally saw them on display, I got my panties all bunched up thinking I was actually going to walk out the store with one in hand. At the Tachikawa BIC, they had a row of signs showing each color, and only one marked “not in stock” or what ever. So I asked the logical question, “Does that mean only Pink is out of stock?” Within minutes they fixed that…tired of hearing that question!
