Business 2.0 has created a list of executives and their advice for success in 2004. In the ‘How to Create Cool Technology’ category, Steve Jobs mentions video editing software and the iPod.

does that mean there’s gonna be a new ipod in 2004?

Yes it’s true. Apple used to have a huge research contingent that developed products in-house. In fact in the 80s they took over from Atari as the the coolest place to do non-academic research in consumer computing.
But they were shrinking their R&D even before Jobs took back the company, and he has managed to reduce Apple’s R&D spend by over 50% since.
So now they can no longer develop in-house, they have to buy from outside. That’s why they assembled the iPod from the PortalPlayer and the PicOS.
