John Lennon solo catalog now available on iTunes

John Lennon’s solo catalog has been made available on the iTunes Store. Among the offerings are sixteen of Lennon’s solo works, including the “Lennon Legend” and “Acoustic” collections, which are making their worldwide digital debuts. The albums “John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band,” “Sometime in New York City,” “Walls and Bridges,” “Milk and Honey” and the collections “Anthology” and “Working Class Hero” will also include exclusive video content for a period of 30 days. “John would have loved the fact that his music will now be available in a format suited to a new generation of listeners,” said Yoko Ono. “John Lennon is one of the greatest artists of our time,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re thrilled to have his solo catalog available on the iTunes Store for the first time.” As part of EMI’s DRM-free initiative, Lennon’s solo works are also available as iTunes Plus downloads for $1.29 per song.

This was done in a surprisingly low-key manner.
There are still kinks, however, as there were when McCartney’s catalogue was added - it doesn’t show albums like Acoustic, Anthology, Milk & Honey and Double Fantasy (and maybe others) when you click on the link on the main page, or use John Lennon as the criteria - you have to search for each of theses albums individually. That’s odd.

I highly recommend buying the “Working Class Hero” 2-CD compilation. With 38 tracks, it has every great John Lennon solo song and then some.

If you’re thinking of purchasing the studio albums….
1. Plastic Ono Band - Although I’m no fan of the remastered version which glosses over Spector’s gloriously muddy/stark production
2. Imagine
3. Double Fantasy
4. Walls And Bridge
5. Milk & Honey
6. Mind Games
7. Rock ‘n’ Roll
8. Sometime In New York City
And then there’s some classic non-album hits that you could cherry pick from Lennon Legend.

George is on his way, I’m sure. Two of his studio albums (Dark Horse/Extra Texture) still need to be remastered, then the catalog will be ready.
And same goes for The Beatles. The only hold-out right now is the finishing touches on the batch of complete remasters. Trust me, as evidenced by the sound of some of the recent Beatles compilations (Submarine Songtrack, 1, Let It Be Naked) it’ll be worth the wait.
