KBase Document: How to Install Dock Cover
Apple has posted a KBase document on iPod (with Dock Connector): How to Install Dock Cover M9130G/A:
“If you buy an iPod model that includes a dock, the dock cover is already installed.
If you buy an iPod that does not include a dock, or if you buy an extra dock, you must install the cover that fits your iPod model. The 10 GB and 15 GB models are slightly thinner than the 30 GB model, and they use a dock cover that has a thinner opening. This cover is labeled “10/15GB Dock cover’. The cover for the 30 GB model has a slightly deeper opening. It is labeled ‘30GB Dock cover’.”

if you were to actually read, it says that you need to if you buy an extra dock.
and this is interesting because from looking at my 15 gig’s dock i thought that the opening would have to be bigger for the 30gig, and now i understand how that works

Indeed, now we know that the 10/15 dock is in fact smaller than the 30 dock.

So a 30 GB iPods dock cannot be used to sync a new 10 GB iPod? Interersting. My wife was going to buy one of those and was going to use my dock. Aparently this is not possible.
Does anybody have a 30 GB iPod handy to stick into a 15 GB dock?

I’m sure you can use the 10 in a 30 dock, but not the other way around.
