Legal downloads will take off in 2004

“The European music download scene will turn around in 2004. Many consumers who have routinely downloaded for free will become resigned to paying for legitimate services. Portals will benefit first; Apple’s iTunes and Napster will win in the long run. “Attempts to stop illicit downloading in Europe have failed so far,” said Forrester Senior Analyst Rebecca Jennings. “But commercial sites just need to be patient as the market gradually changes. In 2004, a combination of legal action by the music industry and expansion of legitimate services will cause a watershed in the download market.”“

Eventually we get some music download sites that are legal. Though the way you say ‘resigned’ seems to imply that illeagal downloading will stop. I doubt that very much….
I wonder will we be ripped off like we are with every other product? It will be interesting to see how expencive it will cost compared to the USA iTunes.
Im sceptical but pleased it will soon turn up….

I’m getting tired of these articles that claim that legal downloads will soon take hold on the mass market. What evidence do they have to make a claim like this? Yes, legal download sites are certainly taking off… but look at the big picture. The percentage of legal downloads vs. illegal downloads probably amounts to a rounding error. It’s insignificant. There’s no sign whatsoever that the overall market is changing.

I agree with PodMax, illegal music downloads won’t stop in a hurry. Here in the UK we are ripped off on everything and that is one reason why people download music illegally. If legal music downloads can be kept cheap then they will be successful.

Kind of depressing that crappy quality mp3s will be the new medium of choice for music. Quite frankly, I buy a CD for the quality not to make myself feel less guilty about downloading music.

tape copying——- higher quality, more durable cds/dvds
trading ripped cds via mp3s on the internet—- legal mp3 downloading?
No. People will pay for quality and ingenuity.
Move on recording industry. SACDs/DVD audio are a step in the right direction, now just bring the price down and players more available (in cars, boomboxes, portables, etc)
I hope to god the legal downloading of mp3s is the future of music.
