Whineing about how the Third Gen is no longer the best? Besides the Sceptical Batterie life. In which ways is that Pouris, Dirt Catching ‘Click-Wheel’ better then the solid-state no moving parts (save the HDD), ‘Touch-Senceitve-Wheel + Buttons’ better? God forbid One of us should ever accidently spill some Coffie over it. The said Coffie would roll off my iPod. Where as it woulld get into yours!! I scauff at you!
Whineing indeed.
The OS Revions are linked to there respective Hardware revisions. I suspect that the Mini 1.1 (which BTW is lower on the Totem Pole the the lowly First & Second Gen. iPod’s), Although I never had one in my hand I would think that it would be simular to the 2.2 OS for the Third Gen.
BTW: does the Mini 1.1 have Solitare, Parashoot and that Name that Tune Game?

@jr: are you such a die hard apple fan that you pay for each minor upgrade (i.e. OSX upgrades) a ridiculously high price? you even buy a minor upgrade for a portable audio player for $$$$?
i am a pc user for many years (amiga, atari, and some machines before) and i like apple’s gadgets so i bought a newton 2100 - soon after apple dicontinued the newtons and never fixed their probs. i was quite mad at that time and decided, never to buy apple again. in december last year i bought a 3g ipod because it is definitly the best portable mp3-player in the world. now the same thing happens: apple has a new product/upgrade and they discontinue the support for the old *expensive* product. it would be quite ease for them to add a couple of wanted features to the 1g and 2g users and to freshen up the firmware to draw fewer energy in the 3g ipods.
well - i am convinced now. i will buy a new portable player someday. but *never* an apple!

Just a quick question - Are all the haters here windows users or is it a mix?
I used to really like iPodlounge & even though it not their fault everywhere you look, I hate this, I hate that, Apple is this, Apple is that, blah blah bloody blah. Its just turning into a rant zone.
I think people (you know who you are) just need to take a step back & get a life whilst doing it!

Cry, Cry, Cry. Give me a break. Chrome says the 3g was the best mp3 player made. So now you have the 2nd best mp3 player made. Do you want to me to get you 3g users a hanky. And because you don’t get a meaningless firmware update that the 4g gets you cry. And won’t buy from apple anymore. LOL. What a joke. Go buy a second rate mp3 player from someone else. You know who loses. YOU.
Liberal whining and the feeling of extreme entitlement. What is this country coming to

“When Apple introduced the iTunes Music Store, they did make an update available for 1G and 2G iPods so that FairPlay AAC audio would work quite nicely on them.”
Apple did this because it created revenue for them. Which is also why they purposely cripple the updaters from enhancing the earlier iPod firmwares to add features. They want you to spend the big bux to buy a new one.
“guaranteed all the anti-apple people are either students (never had a real job) or in the social services sector…(or just live in calif)”
Shows what you know. In Cali, especially n Cali, Apple is like an icon company. All the press here slavishly follows Apple and Steve Jobs without the slightest critical perspective.
For the record, I am an anesthesiologist, I earn the super big bux, and after 20 years or using PCs and Macs I can confidently say that Macs pretty much suck. Apple is a wannabe monopolist with extreme control issues disguised behind a velvet glove and pretty screen icons.
The real tragedy about Apple and Steve Jobs is not that they are evil, but they are failures at being really evil. Microsoft, Dell, Compaq, Acer, Toshiba - the list goes on and on of companies that out-competed and annihilated Apple in the marketplace of ideas and revenues and units shipped.

Hi guys,
Prior to update my 4G ipod, I was reading the comments above. Was reluctant but decided to give it a shot. I’m using Winxp pro with usb connector:
The steps:
1. Install s/w. Reboot as requested by the updater.
2. After reboot, hook up the ipod, the updater program will pop-up requesting for update the ipod. Update the ipod. The ipod will reset. It took about less than 3 minutes. (btw, I’m using usb connector).
3. After successful update, a power adapter icon will appear on the ipod screen. Simply unlug from the usb cable, and hook the unit to the power outlet.
4. The icon will disappear and an indicator bar show some process at the background. Once this finish, the ipod will revert to normal and starts charging! Viola….

“is your cell phone updated for free?”
Yes, the firmware AND operating system in my phone is updated probably 4 or 5 times a year.
Apple needs to stop being so arrogant and forgetting who made the iPod a success. The 3G had firmware flaws and problems that could EASILY be corrected IN SOFTWARE, but they already have our money, so why should they care, right?
No wonder this comopany can’t do better than 3% market share. All it’s gonna take is one smart company to make the right MP3 player and SUPPORT IT AFTER THE PURCHASE and Apple’s entire new MP3 market and income will die. And personally I’ll be glad to see it happen.
Try and grasp this simple point: WE WANT THE FLAWS FIXED. We want features that can be uncrippled by simple software. No one is asking for hardware improvements, that;s stupid. We simply want Apple to stop treating older customers like crap.
WHy you Apple fanboys can;t understand that is beyond me. Even Microsoft treats it’s customers better than this.

“This my last Apple product! I’m going to think twice about buying an iPod again!”
I have a new quote for you… “Dude, you’re getting a Dell!”
You people are silly. They aren’t “abandoning” you, children. They are making a new product! It’s like saying I should expect my G4 to get 64 processing instructions or something just because the G5’s are out. I bought a DP 800 Mhz G4 when it first came out. A year and half later it was the weakest in the lineup. Now, you can’t even get one that slow. That’s called buying high tech gadgets, kids, get used to it. Your product does exactly what it was advertised to do. You got your money’s worth. But, if you’re so stupid as to truly feel screwed then you deserve whatever Microsoft/Dell/Gateway thing you buy next. Enjoy!

How is it that you fail to understand WE WANT THE BUGS FIXED?
It’s not like we’re speaking a foriegn language here, we’re all writing in English.
Apple is one of the only tech cpmpanies I know that treats it’s customers like this.

to quote a 14yr i heard in a local apple store here in sydney a few days ago “why doesnt the new version have any new games? i paid another $400 to get the same old ####??” *laughs* if you want games & other features, go buy a PDA.. the iPods are MP3 PLAYERS.. so go get on a bike, burn off a spare tyre or 5, and use your iPod for what its meant for - Music. My 3G is over a year old, scratched alittle but still works as sexy as the day i got it

Are they ever going to change the 3G iPod to get rid of the OK To Disconnect message after you unmount the iPod? Did they already change this, and I just don’t know about it? I can’t remember the last time I updated my iPod, so maybe they fixed it, or maybe they left it and people just dealt with it.

Sadly doing the new update to my new Ipod, it removed all of my previously downloaded music that I had downloaded from another web site from my hard drive and Itunes. To go in and rob it from my hard drive was unforgivable.

You all are pathetic. Whining all day long that your 3G doesn’t get an update. Does it work right now for you? Oh, it does? Then shut up!
I bought my 3G July 2003 and I’ve never updated it. Works like a charm. I’m still on 2.0.1 of the software. Who cares? It plays music like it’s supposed to.
Why does it constantly need an update if it works fine? You’ve all bought into the mindset that any product these days needs constant updating. Well, it doesn’t! If it’s a good product, it’ll work like it’s supposed to.
