Heh.  Bob, I would have said the OPPOSITE!  It seems to me that ANTI-religionists like to point at some of the ridiculous stuff in the Bible (written, as you correctly point out, by human beings over multiple generations in antiquity) as a way of discrediting religious thought, even in its most abstract forms.

Interesting, no?

Wow, the hatred is unbelievable.  As a Christian, I would appreciate it if folks could keep their anti-religous bigotry and hated to themselves.  Pablo made a simple post to let people know about this download.  If you don’t care about this product, fine.  Why must you post your hate?  If you don’t have anything nice to say, maybe you shouldn’t say anything at all.

Interesting debate going on. :)

I had a degree in Biology and was reading books by Hawkings and Paul Davies when the origin of the universe kept popping into my mind.
How did everything come from nothing? Didn’t make any sense to me.
There was no space, no time, no quantum physics, not even an empty vacumn. Why would an explosion happen to start the universe?

Something had to start this lovely place we call the universe off and it wasn’t itself.

Just a thought for ya. :)

PS. Pablo. Great idea for the iPod.

Isn’t it interesting, if this were a program to add the Quran or other books that are religious book (which the Bible is not, Jesus is on every page if you bother to look and He was the most anti religious man who ever lives) then I’m sure these arguments would not be here.

It is no surprise to me that they are, have you ever thought about that some of you, you would realise thats because the Bible is true, the Bible states that the cross is foolishness to those who are perashishing, the fact so many of you are so worked up and angry at this program, that is Bible could possibly be true shows it.

xScience, you are right to think it’s stupid that nothing was there billions of years ago and then it exploded to make the universe, or somehow the universe created itself, any common sense will grant anyone that insight, but this is what the unbeliver, the Atheist with a huge load of faith (which they have to as they have no proof, just guesses) thinks is true.

Most scientists today know that the universe is not infinite, so the theory that if you have enough time you are mathematically certain to get a universe or anything at all falls flat on it’s face, for one thing, if it was you would never get to today (think about it), also infinity is not loads and loads of time, it’s the lack of time all together, time is a finite thing because it is a physical thing, infinity is no time at all, because it’s not physical but outside the dimensions of the universe it does therefore have no beginning or end, which is exactly what the Bible said thousands of years ago and science if only catching up, there is no need to choose between science and God, there is only truth and lies.

Posted by Gavin on October 4, 2004 at 7:18 PM (CDT)

If anything if you did have millions or billions of years at hand it would be less likely not more to form into what we have, even if it were possible for nothing to make itself because order goes to disorder, not disorder to order, anyone can see that day to day, the only way you can make it go disorder to order is with information, and you only get that with intelligence.

As for those that here that think you get to heaven because you live a good or righteous life, ask yourself this, who is good? who is righteous? do you know someone, anyone who has never done anything wrong? who is perfect? who has never lied, ever, stolen, hated someone else?

No, there is no one good, not one, God does not weigh your good deeds against your bad and if you have more good your in, it does not work that way, if you put on a nice clean shirt to go to a job interview, and on the way your drop some sauce from a sandwich your eating for breakfast onto that shirt, the mark may be small, but is that shirt clean because the mark looks small? No, the shirt is now considered dirty in whole, the same with sin, if you have broken one law, then all is considered broken, and good works are like used menstrual clothes, useless without Christ, and that which is not perfect can not be with that which is, that is God.

Some think that they will get to heaven because God will forgive them because they are basically nice people and God is loving.  It is true that God is loving, in fact He is love itself, but thats actually the reason why he must judge and punish people for their sin, not let them go, if you were in a court room for a crime and stood up and said to the judge “I know I did wrong, but I know you are a good man and so will let me go”, He might say something like this “Yes you are right, I am a good man, but for that very reason I must make sure you are punished for your crimes” You see God is love, but that will not save you, not in that way at least.

Posted by Gavin on October 4, 2004 at 7:19 PM (CDT)

But also because God is love He also made sure of a way out, He knows he has to judge sin and so the person that does it, but also because He is love He does not want to have to do that with anyone, He loves us more than anyone could, in fact what we call love from other people is just a shadow compared to His for everyone of us, because of this he made a way, the only way for Him to both judge sin but at the same time allow any of us to avoid the punishment for that and be with Him is for someone to take our place and go to hell for what we have done, but if that person is also loved (which everyone is) then that person has to be perfect, without sin, and no human is, so God knew they only one who could take our place was Him, only He could do it, and thats what He did, He was born a man so He could die and take our blame and punishment and because He was also fully God and perfect He could not be held in hell forever, and so lives, all we have to do is believe this and follow Him, only through Christ is forgiveness of anything possible.

For those that don’t believe this and that the Bible is true, I ask you, how much do you know of it? how much have you read and studied and looked of it, how much effort have you made to find out?  I tell you, I am not a Christian, I am in a dark place right now, but I have looked, myself and with sure help, over the last 2-3 years, and no matter what happens in my life, nothing could make me deny Christ at least in words and deny the Bible, even though I know little because there is much, I still have learnt more than you can imagine, things that are impossible for any human to know, and things impossible for any human even with thousands of years and thousands of super computers to have made in the Bible text, this book had no human author, humans put pen to paper so to speak, but they were just dictating what the author wanted.

I tell you, look, search, dig before you say no to God or the Bible, open it and read without a heart that has made it’s choice before hand, just like Jesus, he was pronounce guilty a long time before the his trial was even thought of, don’t be like that, it is our nature to reject God and the things of Him, but look before shouting “NO!!!”, Is that not the smart move, the truth will never be found to those that reject it,  if you do look and when you do find it remember, there is only one God and the Lord is His name.

And yes I know I messed up on perishing in a humorous manner, guess thats proof enougth I’m not perfect at least. :-)

wow, i never imagined there would be such an uproar in creating this program. of course its not the program, but the Bible that is a ‘controversy’.

for the sane ones out there who would like to point out all the stupid absurdities along with all the other idiocities in the bible, check this out:

its the bible, with all the problems cross-referenced and annotated.  learn why one page of the bible disagrees with others while enlightening your whole family!

Posted by wes on October 4, 2004 at 9:51 PM (CDT)

wes, as I said, if you don’t want the truth you will never get it, there are no contradictions in the bible(mistransalations yes, but not contradictions), just things you don’t understand and need more work than most non believers are willing to do, I’ve seen a number of things that appear contradictions but if you look deeper you find out it’s not so, its an insight waiting to be found.

But in the end there are many things you will never understand unless you have God’s spirit in you, and you cant have that if you reject Him from the get go.

Posted by Gavin on October 4, 2004 at 10:09 PM (CDT)

I visited the skeptics annotated bible website you suggested, looked at Genesis Chapter 1 and there were 3 things suggested as contradictions.
a) There are 2 accounts of the creation that contradict each other.
b) That light existed before the sun was created.
c) That Whales and birds were created before reptiles and insects.

For a) have a look at this link:

For b) have a look at this link:

For c) it is only the Evolutionary model that dictates that mammals and birds should come before reptiles and insects. In relation to biblical creation this is not a contradiction.

As a side note have a look at where the website sees a contradiction on what animal the gospels say Jesus rode into Jerusalem. They have it that Matthew says a colt and ass, Mark a colt, Luke a colt and John a young ass.
The explanation: A colt is a young ass. The reading of the passage in Matthew has been taken too literally. And really reads that he rode in on an ass, not even an ass, a young ass.

If there are any other bits on the website you want me to have a look at, let me know.

PS No ass jokes! :)

religion is a mental deficiency.

i used to be a strong conservative christian and i have greater understanding of the bible than probably do most of the posters in this thread.  the problem is that the bible is full of garbage written by lots of different people with political motives.  i mean do any of you really believe that genisis is LITTERALLY true?  please.  its just fairy tales and absurb crap.  once you can admit that you may be wrong, then you can really move forward and learn.

the sun doesnt move around the earth does it? science shows that, so why would you disagree with all the other proofs against the myths in the bible?

Posted by wes on October 5, 2004 at 4:49 PM (CDT)

Where it says that the sun moves around the earth?

Posted by chivo on October 5, 2004 at 5:15 PM (CDT)

Religion is mans attempt to pay the price for sin, but man can not pay that price, Jesus Christ paid it for us.

By the way, wes, you never were a Christian, your not a Christian just because you call yourself one or you do certain things, you are a Christian if you are in Christ, you also can not become a Christian and then not be one, you are saved or not and thats that.

Yes Genesis is literal, do you believe nothing made itself? It’s a finite universe, and you cant have infinite time, so your stuck.

Also the universe and world and our own bodies are so obviously designed things, and you cant have a design without a designer, evolution is absurdity that even most scientists today dont believe in, but of course you won’t hear them shout about it of course as that would mean accepting a designer did it which would make far too much sense for them to cope with, it would also mean being responsible.

A bunch load of scienctists by the way have by scientifict means come to the result that the universe was made in six days, just by being honest with themselves for a change they figured that out.

Once you admit your very nature doesnt want the truth, then maybe you can move on and learn that there is more to the just the text you read, a lot of things are to do with translations.

For example your sun going around the earth thing, well thats an old one that never held water, the bible does not say that, thats just yours and others shallow understanding and as you dont want it to be true anyway you look no further.

One example that people use to say the Bible says the sun goes around the earth is Psalm 19 verse 6 which goes (talking about the sun):

“His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.”

No where there does it say the earth doesnt move around the sun, in fact science now knows that the sun in fact does move, not around the earth but around in a gigantic orbit around the center of the Milky Way galaxy; traveling at 600,000 miles an hour. It also is believed that our galaxy is moving with respect to other galaxies in the Universe. The Sun’s going forth is indeed from one end of the heavens to the other.

Posted by Gavin on October 5, 2004 at 8:23 PM (CDT)

Another verse used is Psalm 93 verse 1 where it states “the world also is established, that it can not be moved”, now you have to realise something, english is nowhere near as good a laungage as Hebrew or Greek that the Bible was written in, both those laungages are far more dense and expressive than english, you could write a whole sentence to express what Hebrew or Greek can say in just a few words, also many words have multiple meaning that can only be understood by its context and other words in the same sentence, but of course you would only know this if you want to know. Anyway, that verse does only state that the earth can not be moved from its orbit, only God himself could do that, we cant.

Another one is Joshua 10 verses 12 to 14 in which Joshua asks the Lord to make the Sun and Moon stand still so that he could finish a battle he was in in daylight hours, but how on earth anyone comes up with the idea that the Earth goes around the Sun just from that is nuts, its both a gross misinterpretation and a misapplication of the verse. This passage does not teach geocentricity (that is Earth is center of Universe and the Sun and planets go around it).

Also another myth for you is the fact people think the Bible teaches the Earth is flat, again false, one verse in Revelation states that there will be angels standing on the four corners of the Earth, people assume from that the Bible says the Earth is flat because it has corners, if once again you want to know the truth and look for it you will find out that in the original text it means north, south, east, and west.

Also in many other verses the Bible actually teaches the Earth is a sphere floating in space, in a number of verses the word circle is used to discribe the shape of the Earth, now some would say aha it means a flat disc, but not so, if you look at the original Hebrew it actually means sphere, once again, you only know this if you want to. The idea that many in history have believed that the Earth is flat because of the Bible is another myth, in fact the opposite is true, many believed the Earth was a sphere because of the Bible, it was very few that believed in a flat Earth.

we’re supposed 2 b posting comments on the bibleplayer! not arguing over if the Bible is true or not!!

Posted by sheesh on October 5, 2004 at 9:13 PM (CDT)

The King James version of the bible only!!!

What about the other versions of the bible? Why weren’t they included as well?

Oh thats right the KJ version is the most widely accepted version. Gee ... can’t you people even agree on a single version of the bible? Let alone a single religion?
Wouldn’t “someone” from above have made the decision as to which version was correct.
I can hear it now in a thundering voice .... “THE KING JAMES VERSION IS THE ONE YOU MUST FOLLOW”
And then it was so.

Posted by PeeBee on October 5, 2004 at 11:31 PM (CDT)

If we could all read Hebrew and Greek then we wouldn’t need translations.

The differences between the version are language style and translating techniques. All are translated from the Hebrew and Greek bible.
