Mac|Windows: iPod Updater 2004-10-20 released
iPod Updater 2004-10-20 includes iPod Photo Software 1.0 for use with iPod Photo. iPod Updater 2004-10-20 also contains the same iPod software included in iPod Updater 2004-08-06 for all other iPod models. Download and install the iPod Updater 2004-10-20 then connect your iPod, iPod Photo or iPod mini to your computer. The iPod Updater will automatically determine if an update is required.

I don’t mind not having any firmware updates for my 4g. If it works, don’t fix it. However, if apple were to give AAC+ support to only photo ipods, then I would be pissed.

Why Apple should release firmware upgrades for 3/4G ipods?
It’s good for buisness, that’s why. If the customers are pleased, they will be more inclined to buy future products. For example, If you get bad custumer service, then you’re probably going to think twice before you buy another product from that company.
There are several things that could be fixed/added with a firmware upgrade that would make the iPod that much better.
Display genre and maybe rating on the now playing screen. Why genre you ask? So you could add a bunch of tracks and give them a generic genre, say electronic, in iTunes, sync and then change to more specific ones on the go (see below).
The ability to add/remove a track to/from any (non-smart) playlist and also to be able to change the genre of a track.
A info screen that shows if you hold the select button wich would show info about the current song like all id3 tags, filename, stats (number of times played, last played etc, wich playlists it is in). Stats are always fun and i use the URL id3v2 tag extensivley and it would be great if i could see it on the iPod.
The ability to set the number of beeps for the alarm. And being able to change the volume for the alarm if you choose a playlist. I would like to use both the sleep timer and the alarm, but since i set the volume to very low when using the sleep timer, the alarm is useless.
Flag a song for deletion upon sync.
Part shuffle option for the iPod.

Fix the “do not disconnect” screen when the iPod is in the dock, now that was a great upgrade! (or not).
I don’t know how hard it is to update the firmware, but surley they can do better than they have, i know it would make, me at least, less inclined to look around for other options when my ipod dies. The competition is starting to catch up, so apple better step it up. The only thing, granted a very important one, that apple is better at then all the other is the UI. And maybe the iTMS, if you care about that.
