We recently reported that Smart is manufacturing the limitied-edition i-move car with built-in connectivity for iPod. Macworld UK has posted a photo and more information regarding this new development.
“Macworld sources say the iPod connects to the car stereo, with a dock that’s built-into the car. It shows up on the stereo as an auxiliary device, and can be controlled using the stereo. Just one hundred so-equipped Smart cars will be released in France, though “Smart UK is really interested in doing the same,” said a source.
Unlike the US ‘iPods unite’ promotion of a Volkswagen Beetle with an iPod that connects to the car using a cassette stereo adaptor, Smart have built connectivity into the vehicle.”

The Volkswagen and IPOD deal totally sucks. They should have included an aux-in port instead of using a tape deck connection.
The commercial is completely annoying too. You know, that “Night and Day” song.

Agreed! The VW deal truly sux! However, based on the pic, I think the Smart Car set up will be pretty cool. In a perfect world, Apple would do the same with the new Toyota Prius. But not only would you be able to do the basics (vol +/-, play/pause, skip/repeat) using the car’s stereo, you should be able to control EVERYTHING on the iPod using the Prius’s touchscreen. I’d plunk my $ down tomorrow and worry about the Repo Man later.
