I’m mildly disappointed that my entry lost out (the Rene Magritte homage), but such is life, the grand prize winning picture is a good one.

I think I’m more disappointed that the second prize winner was picked over the entry it ripped off, the black and white picture of the girl applying mascara.

I’m not an *official* judge, but I believe the mascara photo unfortunately could not be considered due to its addition of the Apple Logo / Slogan… No edits allowed.

Proto - your Magritte homage was a great shot. It was among the extended list of honorable mentions we were originally going to post. That said, be careful with the term “ripped off,” not only because it’s a strong accusation to throw around considering we don’t know whose picture was actually taken first (not just submitted first), but also because one person’s ‘homage’ might be another person’s ‘rip off’...

I think one of my entries should win “prettiest to look at” award

Love first place photo. Not sure about 2nd place photo. 3rd place photo is awful. My mothers words: “no one wants to see his underwear” What did the judges not like about mine?

Sorry… I know the judges cant answer that about ever photo that didnt win =D

I’m kind of insulted you would insinuate that my image which borrows a theme from a famous painting could even be considered similar to copying another contestants entry.

Anyway, its not my image, so I’ll stop talking about it now.

Skitals - your pics were great too. Very cool idea. Wasn’t so much a matter of “not like,” as we liked a lot of the photos submitted.

Proto: Sorry, just standing up for the person who was accused of “ripping off” someone else’s idea. What did you think of the red shoes/red chair shot - recognize it from anywhere?

Sure, that’s based on Steigman’s Blown Away. Great picture too.

As I said, there is a difference between reworking an idea from (pop) culture to include an iPod and redoing an image already in the contest with slightly different content.

I don’t think anyone that didn’t win doesn’t feel alittle dissapointed but I don’t think we should bash em for winning, it’s not their fault .  I had fun with this and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I do feel where your comming from proto yours was one of my favorites. Anyways heres my little flying saucer of an entry just in case someone cares.

Hey Proto, I think your Rene Magritte was the best one and I was sure it was going to win. I was actually really jealous when it was submitted because I figured at that point I had no shot. It’s definately going up as my desktop background, if that means anything to you.

Anyway, I’ll post any first impressions after the UE-10’s come in, although I’m going from ex71’s so I don’t know if my input will be of any value to serious audiophiles. Thanks everyone for your kind words about my shot, I really didn’t think much of it but I guess the truth about my ipod obsession had to come out sooner or later!

So the fine line between genius and insanity is what is exceptable in today’s society?  And if a person has a balanced idea (which represents the normal user) that is not outstanding.  Obsession is not something to admire, even if it’s for an iPod.

Hey - Congratulations to all! I had a great time thinking up iDeas.

As far as the judging goes - I think all the winners were worthy. Judging artwork is always difficult. It is just subjective. Every person who viewed this album likely would have picked different winners.  When creating art, it is virtually impossible not to consider previous work. As an artist, you see something and think “wow, i like that. I’m going to investigate that idea.”  In most cases, I don’t think “ripping off” is an appropriate term. Or maybe ALL art IS ripping off. We rip off a piece for ourselves then make it our own…. Did Apple rip off Xerox? Did Windows rip off Macintosh, Did Andy Warhol rip off Campbell’s Soup, Anyway… Blah Blah Blah….Thanks for the photo assignment. I’m ready for the next one.

I agree, the black and white entry w/ the mascara was a lot better than the lipstick it had more artistic appeal.  As for the theory that it was DQed due to the iPod logo I contacted them via e-mail when I had planned on submitting my entry and it was said that it was OK to apply an Apple logo.

it’s nice to be in the top six (that’s me whizzing by in the green jacket)...should have thought of letting my underpants hang out though. might have given me that competitive edge.  i love the first place winner! that’s how i feel sometimes.

I loved your entry, and would have placed it in the top 3 myself. 

It really illustrated the “zoning out” effect that occurs when using the iPod somewhere busy and distracting.  Great picture!

This can’t be. The picture that won (second place) used the Apple logo (on the iPod itself). Also, there is no difference between hosting the the entry with the Apple “Think Different” logo it (in other words putting it on the website) and allowing it to win (and putting it on the website). Both are an illegal infringement of Apple’s trademark. Apple is not complaining though, and an entry should not have been exluded on that basis (especially if that was not made clear). Both entries were nice, but the black and white one was much nicer.
