whatwhatWHAT?
TWO new offshoots? Maybe that just refers to two different memory-size options?

Figure one to be a flash-based player and the other to be a photo iPod with 60 GB of storage. I bet the announcement will thus cover both ends of the storage spectrum.
The thing is…do we have to wait for 2005 before these babies become available???

My only problem is that I just bought my 40GB iPod a month ago. Apple should institute an ‘upgrade’ plan for those consumers, like me, who would have waited a few months to get the best. I know technology changes rapidly, but this would keep customers happy…

i think they do have an upgrade plan, it costs $599 though. a bit steep if you ask me.

No offense “James” (if that is your real name), but why would Apple go and do something stupid, like have an upgrade plan.
Does you new iPod do EXACTLY WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD WHEN YOU BOUGHT IT?
Obviously it does. End of story.
You said it yourself. Technology changes rapidly.

> why would Apple go and do something stupid, like have an upgrade plan.
Yeah that would be dumb.
I managed to take out the 5GB drive in my old 1G iPod and replace it with a new 40GB Hitachi drive for around $120.
It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. I can’t see Apple offering a service like that for much less than the price of a new iPod.

Yeah, not like my Alienwear, where i can send my computer into them for as long as i own it and get upgrades at wholesale cost with no charge for labor….. Why would Alienware go through that? To make sure that if i buy a computer again, i buy it from them.

Wait… so iPodlounge doesn’t post even the most substantiated rumors, but gladly posts some stock analyst’s best (i.e. based on rumors) guesses?

Merrill Lynch doesn’t have any better idea about what Apple is going to do than anyone else does. Everyone knows that Apple keeps things close to the vest. There is no reason they would give Merrill Lynch some exclusive peek at their future product cycles.
This is a simple case of an stock analyst saying what he’d “like” to see happen, or what he’s guessing based on rumors floating around. Anyone else have some ideas of what they’d like Apple to do? Anyone heard some juicy rumors about color screens and 60GB drives?
Yeah. Your ideas have just as much chance of coming true.
