Microsoft said today that it expects to sell 1 million Zune media players through the first half of 2007. While that figure pales in comparison to iPod sales, Microsoft claims it would be a good start. “We think that’s actually pretty awesome,” said Bryan Lee, corporate vice president for Microsoft’s entertainment group. Lee said that Microsoft expects to eventually “be the leader” in the category, especially once the company releases more Zune models and starts selling them internationally. According to The NPD Group, the Zune ranked No. 2 among all portable MP3 players in its first week of availability, but has since slipped to No. 5.

The question is: If you like the iPod and find it of good design, sound quality and ease of use, what would it take for you to switch to the Zune or any Brand X player? What could Microsoft do that would make their product so much better that people would switch? Something $20 cheaper?
Microsoft can sell something at a loss indefinitely until they “succeed” in driving the better product out of the market, like they did with Netscape. That is the whole key to their success. They will probably bundle the Zune with other products people actually want and then call it a “sale” and do other questionable things to reach their sales goal.

Congrats Bill, Soon, you’ll have 1 million sold. only 70 million more to go!! don’t lose hope, if the zune market faces its likely, premature demise, you can try taking design cues off of the Mac line and release your own glossy white desktops. by the way, the vista interface looks REALLY original. doesn’t look like the mac at all! Now who would say that?!?
