As we draw closer to Macworld 2004, many major news outlets are now reporting that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will announce low cost, mini iPods during his Keynote Presentation. The following is a roundup of articles with varying details about the mini iPod. In the Scotsman newspaper report “New smaller iPod is going for a song” states “Apple has announced it is unveiling a smaller version which will cost around £65 - £185 cheaper than the current bottom-of-the range model.” Also, This is London has headlined its report “Apple launches mini iPod.” Contrary to both these newspapers, Apple has yet to make any formal announcements regarding mini iPods.

i like the one with the play/pause/reverse/forward buttons on the bottom and the scroll function on the right. it would be cool if it wasn’t 2/4 gb but 20/40 gigabites.

I have a few theories. One is a design that will resemble the first gen iPods, but in smaller shape. Otherwise, it’ll be a Karma shape. I defienetly believe that it will retain the touch sensibility in the latter form factor, especially for scrolling if nothing else. Very interesting. If they roll out with the Black iPods, I might have to switch one out on my replacement plan <_< >_>. Maybe I could get one engraved to say AntiPod. Heheh, who knows. Damn Apple for waiting past Christmas ;p, jk, it is wise to put something out that kids can spend their “Christmas money” on. Kudos.

The picture’s I have seen look really fake. There was a design in one of them that I liked. It had the scroll wheel reduced to an up and down strip. I think such an interface would make it more clear which direction up is. (i.e. clockwise being up is not intuitive. Up being up is intuitive.)
I’ll go out on a limb and predict that the new iPods will not be physically smaller than current iPods.
I think it totally makes sense to come out with iPods in the lower price range - like $99 - $150. Apple already has the higher end market - this will help them capture the low end as well. If they can manage to hang onto a high market share for a while, they can win the DRM format wars.
