More iPod muggings in UK

Back in Febrary we we reported that the “This is London” website was reporting that iPod owners were being targeted by criminals. Today, “The Register UK” is reporting a person was mugged for their iPod.

“West Midlands police have issued a stark warning to iPod users: ditch the white headphones or pay the price.

Fashion-conscious music lovers are apparently being targeted by muggers. The Times tells the sorry tale of 22-year-old language student Roland Baskerville, who lost his 20GB model on the mean streets of Birmingham: “I was walking down the road near to my home when a man who was walking the other way pointed at my headphones.”

The thief then asked Baskerville if he was listening to an iPod and, receiving an affirmative answer, he “pulled a knife out and started waving it at me, saying: ‘Well hand it over, then.’ I gave it to him and he ran off. He must have known I was wearing an iPod because of the white headphones.”

“Are you listening to an ipod?”
“Sure am.  This thing is beautiful isn’t it.  Holds 20 gigs of music that I can sort by rating, genre, least played, and even most played.  See this case? I got that for 25 bucks at compusa, i would have gotten a hard case but you can’t access the buttons the way you can with neoprene…”
“Just give me the damn thing!”

An iPod is one of many things (cell phone, PDA, digital camera, cash!) I would not reveal in public unless it was a very safe, high-visibility area, had plenty of people around, etc… Being cautious with personal electronics is nothing new.

But when you find yourself often in more dangerous surroundings, losing the widely-recognized earbuds is smart. Someone here recommended these, and although I don’t have an iPod YET (just a PowerBook), they’re great. Excellent sound, fold up like glasses for travel (cool!) with an included hard case, sturdy, comfortable (padded headband), not expensive ($39) for the quality, and much nicer to use than earbuds in my opinion. I’m no audiophile but I never expected such bass from compact headphones. Sennheiser PX 100s:

Does anyone in the U.K. ever buy anything? I thought the economy thribed on nicking your best mates gear and selling it back to him?

I’m really glad I live in Canada.

I live in Canada too. I’m a stalker, concentrating on ipod users. Give me your name and address and a general idea of your movements during the week and I’ll see if we can hook up.

Enjoying the security of living in a semi-free state (with the notable exceptions of property, expression, self-medication, moral choice, etc, etc, etc) I never walk the streets with my iPod showing unless I’m carrying that other must-have, fashion accessory - the Smith & Wesson Model 60.

Never mind your safety - ditch the buds for your sonic sanity! wink  I pitched mine for a pair of Koss PortaPros about five seconds after hearing how crappy the buds are…

LOL, some dude asked me the same thing and said hand it over! Reached in my jacket pocket and imagine his suprise when I pulled out my shiney new chromed glock with a nice white handle!

Seriously, the average kid in a situation like that would of done the same thing.  Its one thing to talk smack about it here but a different story when you the one with a knife/gun in YOUR face.  Me?  Dude come at me with a knife and he’s got a fight on him.  A gun?  He can have the dam thing.  Just hope I never see him again.

Stylescraper, you are a real tough guy !!!

I’m sure you’d do just the same if someone came up and tried to rob you.  I know I would, and it ain’t weak, stupid, punk or any other name you want to call it.  It’s the clever thing to do.  Fighting a drug crazed thief is at least gonna land you in hospital and at worse give you some nasty disease.

I love my ipod, and I try to keep it well hidden when out on the streets.  The streets are mean, and those robbers are keen.

Take care all…....

I wear my headphones without attaching them to anything.

The look of suprise on the muggers face when he realises is priceless…
