Mossberg reviews the iPod Mini, “a gorgeous device”

“For about a week, my assistant Katie Boehret and I have been testing the iPod Mini. Katie has been toting a pink model everywhere—while walking, riding the D.C. subway and flying. I’ve been using a gold one and a blue one in the house, car and office. We both like these gadgets a lot. In our tests, they exceeded Apple’s claims for both battery life and storage capacity.
The iPod Mini is a gorgeous device that displays Apple’s famous touch for people-pleasing design. At only half an inch thick, and about the length and width of a business card, it feels great in the hand and slips into even a small pocket or purse. It is the first iPod that naturally belongs on an armband for exercising, and Apple will sell such a band as an option.”

How could it exceed Apple’s claims for storage capacity? 4 GB is 4 GB (as a matter of fact, a bit less than that because a hard disk gigabyte is 1000 MB, while a gigabyte in computer terms is 1024 MB)
Or do you mean that songs that it holds? That really dosn’t say much besides the implication that the songs you listen to on average are shorter than 4 minutes.
I’m glad to hear that the battery life is good tho

i think it could hold up to 5,000 songs at low bit rates.

At 128kbps, 1 minute of music roughly equals to 1MB, a 4 minute (average listed by Apple) song equals to 4MB, at 4GB (4,000MB) you could fill roughly 1,000 songs - equally, if the song is only 2 minutes long, then at 128kbps it would be 2MB, if all the songs you would like to put on your iPod mini are 2 minutes long, then it could fill 2,000 songs - as oppose to 1,000 songs.
Simple maths dude! and I thought you were smart when you start talking of “computer terms”... maybe too smart for your own good

I only have one issue with the article. It is something that has been mentioned all over the place.
The iPod mini isn’t competing with the “larger” iPod. There are other MP3 players that are from Rio and the like, that have the same capacity, and cost the same as the mini.
