In its fourth-quarter letter to shareholders and financial results release (PDF Link), Netflix has revealed that the Apple TV has surpassed the iPad in viewing hours, despite having sold far fewer units. Noting that the devices with the largest installed bases—including Windows and Mac laptops, the Sony PS3, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii—are the most popular devices for streaming Netflix, the release states that the “AppleTV has done very well for us, and in just four months has passed the also-growing iPad in Netflix viewing hours.” Apple sold its one-millionth Apple TV the week of December 25th, while cumulative iPads sales as of the same date were 14.79 million.

Well, this is sort of a no brainer. I like the iPad. But watching TV on it is sort of a singular viewing experience. My family isn’t going to sit around the iPad and watch TV.
Watching TV shows on a real, large flat-panel TV is something you can do with your whole family. I purchased the AppleTV2 in November and it might be the best Apple product I’ve ever purchased (and I’ve been using Macs since the mid 1980s.)

I think Apple TV could do really well in the UK if we had Netflix or even Hulu over here, I mean we have LOVEFiLM but it’s postal DVD / Blu-Ray rental service and only streams to the PS3 at the moment.

I have been using Netflix for years but have recently dropped the service. Working for DISH Network, I installed their Remote Access app to my iPad. I can now stream live TV, on demand content, and all my DVR recordings all in HD where ever I am. I couldn’t be happier and there is no comparison to Netflix.
