New iPod & iTunes Hacks book announced

O’Reilly has announced a new book titled “iPod & iTunes Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools” by Hadley Stern. “For those people who want to get more much more out of their iPod “iPod & iTunes Hacks” is brimming with undocumented tips, tricks, and trade secrets for getting the very most from your iPod.” O’Reilly has posted ten free hacks for download in PDF format. O’Reilly is accepting pre-orders for $24.95 with shipping expected to begin in early October.

I don’t see how re-printing the Airtunes owners manual is a hack?
If the “hack” teasers are the best that the book has to offer the publisher should re-think the advance check they wrote to the author!

Can a meaningful book really be written about ipod functionality? This seems like something only out of touch grandmothers would buy as birthday gifts for junior.

the only problem that I would have is if they just reprint ‘hacks’ that have been made publically available through various ipod sites (like ipodlounge), and then pretend that the authors came up with the hacks. If they have ones that nobody else has, then ok, go write a book about it. If it is just someone else’s work and you are copying, then don’t waste my time!

this is the author here
Just a few points about the book. Like the rest of the O’Reilly hack series book this book is written by the author and by contributors. For example, the hack on installing Linux on your iPod is written by Bernard Leech, who developed the software that makes the hack work. So nothing is “copied”!
As far as the contents of the book don’t judge it by the 10 beta hacks. There are a ton of true hacks in the book including that take a look at, for example, the back end of the iTunes music store, using Perl to access the iTunes database, accessing the iPod using .Net, installing your iPod in your car permanently, buidling your own headphone pre-amp, hacking the iTunes interface, and many many more.
Anyhow, take a look at the book when it’s out, there is a ton of stuff to enjoy!

I think that these types of books are useful for the average person who may not be fully knowledgeable about their iPod and what it can do or other software that will increase their enjoyment of iPod.
However, ape had a good point which could make for an interesting thought exploration - “Can a meaningful book really be written about iPod functionality?” It seems to me that iPod is so easy to use and understand that it seems jaded to try and write a book to explain things for iPod.
For those who are contstant readers of ipodlounge.com, we are probably pretty familiar with the majority of the book, and I don’t think that is the market that O’Reilly is trying to interest. Regardless, I still plan on checking out the book to see if I can glean any more insight from the authors, who have obviously put in a generous amount of time to compile some useful things to iPod owners.

I have been waiting for this kind of book for a long time. Many ipod books published were just manuals or general ideas that everyone would know. I hope this one would probably bring something valuable.

The only thing I want out to get more out of my iPod is Sound! (Living in EU HELL e.g. the Volume Cap!)
I’d lie good odds that this is indeed one subject that the Author again neglected to cover although there are more then enough resources to help One out, on the ‘Net.
But it still would be helpful to everyone if some ‘resposable’ Author took the time to address this issue. (for both sides), Apperntly the iPod is TO LOUD FOR SOME (Wanta trade?!?!?)... lol
I mean really this is all just noob stuff that can be answered by simply RTFM! and nothing that Two or Three Hours on Google can’t bring you too. Sure it would be nice to have it in a Book form. But, as others have said ‘The First Book was enough!’...
