If someone is making money at this I don’t think it’s a dumb idea. I have a hard time understanding why everyone sees it as a dumb idea. I believe someone identified a market need and is suppling the service. Some people have more money than time and are not remotely interested in spending their time ripping cd’s but do want to listen to music on their iPod’s. For the record I am not one of those people, doubt that anyone that visits iPodlounge is, different crowd entirely.

This guy Jimmy Bones, just give him your address. He and a couple of his friends will drop by. Give him your iPod, all your CDs, and—in fact—anything else. You have DVDs? Give him those, too. DVD players? They’ll take those, too. TVs, VCRs, microwaves—anything that’ll fit in the back of his Chevy Caprice.

Jimmy Bones won’t promise when you’ll get it back, but, you know, he’s a good guy. You’ll get something back. Eventually.

I agree with Retro that if you can make money doing this, then it’s not stupid.  I myself would never want someone else encoding my CDs, but for those that do and are willing to shell out the cash, more power to em I guess…

the ipod cost me a lot of money. I’m not about to hand someone I’ve never even met, and could very well be an elaborate scam my shiny,expensive, 20GB ipod. And all my music CDs too… naah, no thanks

I think this is a great service for those who want it. We’ve already heard about services where you ship your entire CD set to a warehouse for uploading… obviously, you folks are expressing that you are not interested in partaking of this service, but I know 3 or 4 iPod owners who were quite perplexed and distraught when they first received their iPods and learned they would have to rip their CDs to be able to listen.  A great service for those folks!

Great… until you decide you want to rip a new CD that you own on to your ipod… 

I would presume the iPod would have to be formatted to work on another computer, thus losing all the songs that have already been transferred up to that point.

Young people with nothing to do but rip a 1000 CD collection are not the only people who buy iPods.

My father is a busy exec who really wanted an iPod but did’t want to take the time to load it with music.  In fact from his perspective, the time required to populate the iPod is FAR more valuable than the iPod itself.  So I recommend a place called RipDigital.  For about a buck a CD they will rip your music to high quality MP3s.  Worked out perfectly.

Off their site:
“charges a mere $1.50 per CD, with a minimum of 50 CD’s. There is also a travel charge of $20. However, the travel fee is waived if you have 100 CD’s or more.”

and they also charge you if the CD is scratched, who honestly doesnt have 1 or 2 scratches on their cd’s… It’s almost impossible to have a prestine CD for 5 years.

and they also dont even indicate what bitrate they’re ripping to.

Man…..

[B]THIS[/B] is the spirit of success, people. I mean what the heck? If I can sell sand to the Saudies, then why shouldn’t I? Very sad that instead of applauding someone’s initiative to DO something, earn a honest $, all they get is slammed. Of course it can be done easily, but as has been said, there are people that have more monies than interest to do this. This is a service. do you slam people that do landscaping, mechanical work, fix pc’s? I can do all those things myself, so I do. However there are lots of people that pay others to do these same things for them. Given that automotive repair is a multi - billion dollar a year industry..I guess there is a market. This is a service exactly the same. So you can do your own…GREAT..then do it…but why slam someone for having a damn good idea to earn a buck, instead of moochin off mommy and daddy, or the government.

wish I had thought of it first!

Uh, why is everyone assuming they are making any money off of this?  Just because it’s a buisness doesn’t mean it’s a good one or it’s meeting any kind of market need.  And, is this a fourth grade science fair where you get an ‘A’ for effort?  If someone can’t take their business idea being slammed, then they’ll probably fail.  I can’t believe this thing will fly—but hey, I could be wrong, and if the guy makes money off of this, more power to him/her.
