No iOS 4.3 beta for iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2G

Unlike prior releases of Apple’s iOS operating system for iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad devices, the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch were notably absent from the list of devices for the beta version of iOS 4.3. While no official announcement has been made on the subject, it is likely that Apple has decided not to release further OS updates for the two devices, which previously missed out on key features added to iOS 4. The iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G were left out on new iOS 4.0 features like multitasking and Home screen backgrounds, then didn’t receive support for AirPrint; the iPhone 3G was snubbed with the launch of Game Center and AirPlay, and exhibited crippling slowdowns in performance with iOS 4.

And so the upgrade path ends at 4.2.1 for my trusty 2G Touch. At least I got AirPlay, love that feature!

It’s disappointing when your device gets left behind, but even more frustrating when they give you a crippled version of the update. Apple made iOS 4 (lite) available for the iPhone 3G, yet for a lot of people it still killed performance. They pulled some more features and reissued it as 4.1 or 4.2 but at that point, why bother?
Since a lot of people upgrade hardware after their two-year phone contract expires anyway, it may not be as big a deal that these devices have such a short support cycle. It’s the people who pay $200-$400 for a portable media player and get left out in the cold so quickly that’s annoying and expensive. It was the buyers of the first gen iPod Touch and unsubsidized iPhone who really got shafted, IMO.

Although it’s a little irritating that we don’t get these new features, they are all available through Cydia. Now most people would think they didn’t need to jailbreak, and so did I, but then I did; having all the features of the new devices (and more) is really fun, especially if, like me, you only get stuff that other iOS devices benefit from i.e. multitasking, wallpaper, battery percentage etc.
