NY Post: 12-Year-Old Sued for Music Downloading

“Brianna LaHara said she was frightened to learn she was among the hundreds of people sued yesterday by giant music companies in federal courts around the country.
‘I got really scared. My stomach is all turning,’ Brianna said last night at the city Housing Authority apartment where she lives with her mom and her 9-year-old brother.
‘I thought it was OK to download music because my mom paid a service fee for it. Out of all people, why did they pick me?’”

Yeah, I have to admit those first comments sidding with the recording industry are pretty sick. Seriouslly, this is a 12 year old. It’s sick, and embarising.
I couldn’t belive they were actually going through with it. I thought the RIAA was going to say it was a mistake. It’s perveted they are going after a 12 year old, because they lost control of their industry, because they refused to evolve their primary business model, because they hurt their reputation (partly with paltry royalties to artists), and because of their conflicting business models (album sales VS broadcast licenses conflict with each other).
Even still, going after a prolific file-sharer is one thing. A 12 year old who in all likely-hood did not fully understand the law, is a completely different thing. If this garners enough news spots, this is a very bad PR move on the RIAA part. Another example of their shinning example of mis-management.

Hmm that’s right it is the mother’s responsibility for what the child is doing. So yea it should transfer to the mother, maybe not, but that’s what I’m thinking. I mean, come on if you’re downloading tons of music for free, and you know that you can buy it from so many stores (Walmart??) how can you not know that it’s illegal to download it online? It’s simple logic (I’m talking about the mother here).

It’s not the artists who are getting the money.
A lot of artists make more money from concerts than their CDs, even though their CDs reach so many more people.
