Older iTunes versions denied iTMS access

Users of iTunes 4.5 or earlier are being urged by Apple to upgrade to 4.6 in order to access the iTunes Music Store. The warning reads, “You are using a version of iTunes that will soon no longer be supported. Upgrade today to take advantage of the latest application features and music store enhancements.”

I bet it does. In fact - October 26, new iTMS in Europe, new iTunes, new black iPod, and firmware upgrades to support the new features of iTunes 4.7?

I think we’ll see a new iTunes for Canadians (rumoured) before the ipod-photo iTunes… supposedly access is coming in november…

This means, I think, a new iTMS on Tue., but NO new iTunes app. If there was a new app coming, Apple would tell people to upgrade AFTER that.
But since iTMS is a system with both remote and local components, of course the need will come to upgrade one to stay current with the other. That’s OK—if you choose not to upgrade, your old iTunes and music will still work. You just can’t shop.
I’ve been using the latest iTunes forever anyway

I need 4.2 for work (editor) and need to be able to both buy songs online AND playback/upload music to my Avid editing machines.

The reason they are demanding the upgrade is that they’ve changed the DRM protection scheme in the new versions. But, programs like iOpener have also been updated.
