Orange: 30,000+ iPhones sold on launch day in UK

Conor Maples, a communications employee with Orange UK, has revealed via a Twitter update that the company has sold more than 30,000 iPhones on launch day. “Orange UK had sold more than 30k iPhones, smashing what we believe is the previously published first day sales records for a phone in the UK,” the posting reads. As Mac Rumors notes, it is unclear what previous first-day sales records Orange is referring to, as O2 is not believed to have revealed specific sales numbers for its launch of the original iPhone in November 2007. Orange is the second carrier to offer the iPhone in the UK behind O2; Vodafone has announced plans to begin offering the handset early next year.

What angers me the most about this is that I recently switched from Orange to O2 purely to get an iPhone 3Gs.  When I phoned Orange for my PAC code prior to ordering the iPhone, Orange asked me why I wanted to leave and if there was anything they could do to make me stay.  I told them it was only because I wanted the iPhone and they couldn’t supply it so had to leave.  Orange said okay and promptly gave me my PAC code.

I went and bought my iPhone and am very pleased with it, but could only afford to get it on the basic tarif, so only get 15 mins and 125 texts for £30 a month.

Then 3 weeks after getting it (and just outsode the time I could have returned the iPhone to O2) Orange go and announce they will be selling the iPhone !!!

Yesterday the Orange plans were announced and the basic plan there is also £30 a month, but with 150 mins and 250 texts!!!!!

Aaaaaagggghhhhhh, why oh why could someone at Orange not have said they that may be getting the iPhone within a few weeks so would I like to hold on?  Had they have said this I would have stayed with Orange, be spending the same amount of cash but be much, MUCH better of with the minutes and texts package.

Thanks a bunch Orange!

Hi just to comment on the above comment i work in phone sales and when you last contacted orange, nobody at orange knew that they were getting the iphone, orange had lost thousands of customers over the iphone to o2 and it was only agreed with apple and orange’s Director Tom Alexander that orange had sealed the deal around the 28/09/09.  This was in press before any staff knew, Sorry for your misfortune.

Maybe o2 will change your plan :-)

‘Maybe o2 will change your plan’

...not likely, nothing in it for them, is there.

To be fair if the only package you could afford was the 75 minutes one and couldn’t stretch another fiver for the 600 minutes package then maybe the iPhone was a bad choice?
