PDASmart offers 100GB iPod upgrade
PDASmart has announced the availability of a 100 gigabyte hard drive upgrade for fifth-generation iPods. The PDASmart 100GB iPod upgrade installs without modification in any 60GB or 80GB 5G (video) iPod. For 30GB 5G iPods, a new rear casing is required to allow for the slightly larger drive size. The upgrade is said to extend storage capacity to 25,000 songs or 125 hours of video. The 100GB upgrade for 60GB and 80GB iPods is priced at $275 for a do-it-yourself kit, which includes the Toshiba drive and tools necessary for the installation. A mail-in installation service is available for $10 extra. The upgrade for 30GB iPods is only available as a mail-in service for $300.

BJ: I agree with you. With 16gb and 32gb flash capacities visible on the horizon it isn’t hard to imagine Apple abandoning the HDD models in favor of faster loading, more reliable, and shock free solid state hardware. Personally I am quite happy with my 60gb 5.0G model. Sure my library tops out at 80+gb, but many of the tracks and vids that make up the difference between what’s on my comp and what’s on my iPod have little appeal to me.
Granted a 16gb flash based memory solution doesn’t appeal to me. A 32gb flash based memory solution is doable. But I would be happier with a 64gb solution. That could easily be a year and a half off.

I have a library of 70GB of music between my wife and I. I am one who needs to carry all my music because I work at a computer all day that has no music on it. I want to be able to listen to anything I feel at the moment, create playlists on the go, rate my songs, etc. without having to remember to sync my ipod with my music server. My music lives on another computer so I’m not running iTunes while working on my notebook. I need the harddisk space for programs and speed. I have a 100GB drive in the notebook and tried carrying my library of 70GB, plus the programs I need, and it was so slow with less than 10GB to use as virtual memory. Believe me, I need the 100GB iPod. I’m stuck with a iriver clix 2GB right now, and it’s driving me crazy. But it’s a pretty nice device too bad it doesn’t come in 100GB flavor!

N e s s, 100GB is not that much if you use high bitrate/lossless encoding. In my case it would be round about 325 albums. I would not think that that’s an excessive amount to want to have accessible.

Bad Beaver, that’s true, if some of us want to use a higher bitrate or lossless encoding, more storage is a huge welcome. Good comment.

It should be noted for 30G 5,5 Gen Video iPod users, Apple has deliberately included in its firmware unability to use the 120GB. n other words they spent money and made a special effort to make it so a variety of hard drives cannot be installed in this version so you cannot upgrade to the classic sizes. For those unaware, the 5.5 Gen iPod is the highest in demand. People like it’s look and size over the classic and cover flow is not something most consider with upgrading for. So Apple is preventing users to upgrade this particular iPod to the sizes the classic is selling. As the larger size hard drives come down in price, Apple will slowly allow some of those drives to be used.
This built in effort to make up reasons for obsoleting use of hardware runs contrary to Apples claim to being green and that it is not building it’s products to make it as difficult as possible to repair and upgrade.
