‘Poddies’ speak up about their favorite music player
It was the must-have Christmas gift of 2003: a gadget that stores your favourite 10,000 tunes and looks incredibly cool, too. So why do people become such bores when they get one? Stephen Moss on the invasion of the Poddies. [...]
Poddies radiate joy - the joy of first love or true belief. “I love my iPod,” says Gareth. “It’s changed my life. Mine’s a 30-gigabyte [already superseded by the 40-gig, note] and holds seven and a half thousand songs. I’ve downloaded 6,000 - the soundtrack of my whole life.”

Wow! That’s a bit extreme, fun though…
And for the record: CDs are NOT obsolete (iTunes is still for Europeans)

I’m surprised that there hasn’t been more of a backlash to the iPod yet. I LOVE my iPod but feel that it’s incredibly ostentatious, so I keep it in my pocket always and use aftermarket black-colored headphones.

yeah, i try not to show mine off either unless someone shows interest. It’s kind of hard for it to not be a big part of my life considering I use it everywhere: car, gym, school, home computer. Because of this, I talk about it like any other part of my life that is just commonplace not knowing that I might sound like i’m bragging, when I’m not. I still think of it as something that has aided in making my life richer but is not more a part of my life than any other inanimate object. It is really the music that I love, not what plays it. Just as a car can have aesthetic beauty, if it doesn’t run, it’s a pile of junk.
