Report: Hon Hai to manufacture Apple iPhone
iPod manufacturer Hon Hai Precision has secured contracts from Apple to build 12 million music-playing mobile phones, according to a Commercial Times report. Quoting industry sources, the publication says Apple will launch the long-rumored “iPhone” in the first half of next year. Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision, which operates electronics factories under the Foxconn name, has been at the center of sweatshop claims because of reported poor working and living conditions at an iPod factory in China.

Let’s see here: Verizon has V-Cast, Cigular/AT&T;lauched a music service, and Sprint is rumored to be working on their own service. For national carriers that pretty much leaves T-Mobile and Altel as the companies who could carry this without competing directly with Apple and iTMS. Its probably to much to hope that this ends up on T-Mo.........

I only wish Apple would get into the national carrier business. If there is any industry that needs to be spanked into shape by Apple, it is the mobile phone industry as a whole… hardware, software, customer service, the whole enchilada!

Well, I’m crossing my fingers it comes to Alltel. And if not, I’m going to figure out how to make it work with Alltel.

Why would Apple go with stodgy carriers like T-Mobile or Alltel. An MVNO like the surfing guys at Helio would be much better!

I think in the end Apple can negotiate with any mobile phone carrier they wish due to their products’ gravity. They’ll probably end up going with either Verizon or Cingular/AT&T;. One would think the gains from having an Apple phone in your lineup will far outweigh the losses. Hell, maybe Apple will just make its own service. It probably has a big white satellite sitting around somewhere…
