Report: Microsoft Office for iOS in early 2013

Microsoft will release a version of Office for iOS in early 2013, according to The Verge. Office Mobile will debut as free apps, and users will be able to view documents with a Microsoft account. At first offering basic viewing functionality, an Office 365 subscription will allow users to edit documents. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that “Office will work across Windows Phone, iOS and Android.” First reported in early October, it’s now expected Office Mobile for iOS will debut in late February or early March.

Just let me buy the apps outright and use them like the other document apps. Because if they expect me to pay a subscription price just to have the ability to edit documents, I’ll quickly go back to using Documents 2 Go or Apple’s offerings, or another app like those. Leave it to Microsoft to be this stupid with their software. They’ll just teach me to rely on them for none of my computing needs.

Too little, too late. Microsoft already blew their chance at capturing Office customers on iOS. Most people have realized that they do not need it.

Apple has sold millions of copies of the iWork apps to iPhone and iPad owners. I think people have realized by now that Office is no longer a necessity.
