Report: Microsoft readying iPod rival, music service
Microsoft is said to be readying a handehld device and music service to compete with the iPod and iTunes Music Store. Following similar claims earlier this year, Reuters reports that the software giant has been privately demonstrating an entertainment device that plays videos and music. Microsoft has also reportedly held discussions with the music industry about licensing music for its own download service. A BusinessWeek report in January said Microsoft was ”mulling its own digital device that adds gaming to music and video, in an effort to compete with Appleās iPod empire.” The company was said to have reorganized its home entertainment and Xbox groups to better plan the device. In March, the Mercury News also reported that Microsoft was planning such a device.

So say goodnight to their partners like Napster, Yahoo, Rhapsody, Real and others. With WMP 11 (or whatever new service) being able to do it all, subscriptions, download and sync. And with it being integrated into ever copy of the OS (hello anti-trust), why would anyone use anything else. Unless you have an iPod, people will just use whatever MS recommend.

QWER & Joe are both right. And ahMEmon makes a good pointed to. I welcome competion, but its the iPod were talking about, while it isnt perfect it is what is is. And if any MP3 had something as good as iTunes i’d drop my iPod in a second, but face it. iTunes IMO is the main reason i’m gonna be keeping my iPod, because it works.
But we’ll just have to wait and see eh?
