Report: NHL, NASCAR close to signing iTunes deals
The NHL and NASCAR are close to reaching agreements with Apple to offer video downloads of their sports content on iTunes. The Sports Business Journal reports [paid. sub. req.] that officials at both the NHL and NASCAR said they have similar deals that are within weeks of completion. “It would be fair to say we are close,â€? said Doug Perlman, NHL executive vice president of media. The NASCAR deal could be completed in time for February’s Daytona 500. In addition, the publication also says that MLB Advanced Media is also negotiating with Apple about an iTunes deal.

Smart move. They’ve seen how well the BCS bowl games have sold recently to know that sports programming will definitely sell on iTunes. The NFL needs to get it in gear now as well.

This is EXACTLY what I’ve been waiting for; sports content to finally show up on iTunes especially the NHL. I agree the NFL needs to get it going and it’s probably gonna start with the Super Bowl.
My main drawback from buying a 5G was lack of sports content and it looks like that’s going to change soon…

The NHL definitely needs to do whatever it can to gain a larger audience. The NHL on OLN averages only 214 households in the Los Angeles area, out of a possible 5.4 million. Ouch!
