Apple will announce three new iPhone models this year, according to a questionable new report from China and Taiwan. There will be a 4-inch-screened iPhone 5S and a supposedly larger-screened 4.8-inch “iPhone Math” model before the end of June, while a third model with a 12-megapixel camera will arrive before Christmas, the report claims. There have already been rumors of an iPhone 5S, as well as a new low-end iPhone model, but iPhone Math seems almost certain to be a bad translation—and the supposedly larger screen size is equally questionable. This new report also claims Apple will launch iTV before year’s end. While the report should be taken with extra grains of salt, it’s interesting in that it is the first to suggest that Apple may have two separate iPhone release events this year, which could spook some potential early adopters into waiting. Eh, I would say the larger screen is more of an almost given than “questionable”. Apple can run all the “banana” ads it wants to defend the current iPhone screen, but the market place has spoken and there are competing models competing respectably against the iPhone with a larger screen a key feature.

If the only difference is a physically larger display while maintaining the same pixel resolution, it’s kind of a no-brainer product. It does nothing to disrupt developers, and can run on the same underlying hardware with more room for better battery life.

Apple has done this many times before. Denying the utility of color screens when competitors beat them to market, denying the utility of video support when competitors beat them to the market, touting the “superiority” of not having stand alone 3rd party apps on the iPhone even though they had been ubiquitous in competing products for years, and so on. Apple innovates when they can, sure, but they follow the money as reliably as a bloodhound, they just make sure to pretend whatever they’re probably about to do is a terrible idea right up until they do it wink

Agreed.  Apple has traditionally kept a product line pretty homogeneous in terms of form factor, but to be competitive they’ll need to mix it up a bit with a different size (as they did with the iPad mini, another reactive decision on their part).
