The new fifth-generation iPod touch lacks a light sensor to enable an auto-brightness setting, and its thin body is the reason, according to an email from Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller. Published by 9to5Mac, Schiller’s email was sent in response to a customer who inquired about the lack of an auto-brightness setting, an omission noted in iLounge’s review of the new iPod touch last week. “The 5th generation iPod touch does not have a built-in automatic light sensor (it’s just too thin!),” Schiller wrote. The new iPod touch is 0.24” thick.

Then why the frak did they not make it thicker? My 8 y.o. daughter’s least favorite thing about her new touch is that it’s too thin even for an 8 y.o. girl’s hands.

Somebody actually tried to tell me today (with a straight face, no less), that the iPod touch doesn’t need a light sensor because people don’t use it outside, since it’s Wi-Fi only.

The Touch is now in its “Calista Flockhart” phase ... haven’t we gone thin enough Phil? Eventually you reach the point of fragility and compromised features.

It’s thick enough to put a full-fledged 5 MP camera, but not thick enough to put a simple photodiode? Yeah right.
