Apple has released a software update for the second-generation Apple TV bringing the device’s software up to version 4.1. Notably, the update includes support for AirPlay streaming from a device running iOS 4.2 or from a Mac or PC running iTunes 10 to the Apple TV. In addition, it adds support for VoiceOver spoken menus; the feature can be turned on via a setting in the Accessibility menu, and reads both the names of menu items and metadata, including episode descriptions of TV shows. Apple TV software 4.1 is available now via the Update Software menu item in the device’s General settings menu.

I just downloaded the update for my ATV via iTunes and it looks like it’s actually version 4.2 (AppleTV2,1_4.2_8C150_Restore.ipsw). But I can’t verify it with the update server, presumably due to the 4.2 iOS release hysteria.

#1,
That’s interesting - on the Apple TV’s about screen, it’s listed as Software Version 4.1.

I noticed this as well Charles, but looking back at my previous ipsw’s, AppleTV2,1_4.1_8M89_Restore.ipsw was the name of the “4.0” software that was factory installed on my device….

I know this is a little confusing. It’s software 4.1, but firmware 4.2. You have to click through the first info screen to see the firmware update info. Although were talking completely different hardware Apple considers this the 4th version of their Apple TV software which would be 4.X. So this means it’s 4.2 for all iOS devices across the board.

After a couple of clicks on the about screen, it reads OS Build Version 4.2.1 (8c150)
