SendStation announces PocketDock FireWire-to-iPod adapter
German based SendStation has developed the PocketDock, a standard 6-pin FireWire cable to docking iPod adapter. The tiny device allows you to utilize exisiting accessories such as car chargers for old iPods. PocketDock is available for pre-order at $16.95 and is expected to ship at the end of July.

Frankfurt/Main, Germany — July 09, 2003 — Sendstation Systems today announced the PocketDock, an indispensable companion for Apple’s sensational and wildly successful new iPod MP3 player. The PocketDock is smaller than a box of matches and allows a standard 6-pin FireWire cable to connect to the iPod’s proprietary docking port, giving the user the freedom and independence she has come to expect from her iPod.

I have an awful lot invested in accessories for by generation 1 (now lost) and generation 2 (now malfunctioning) iPods. I have hoped someone would do this! Have already preordered mine. I kinda wonder why Apple didn’t do this but I already know the answer

When compared to Apple’s iPod cable (which is $19) $16.95 sounds reasonable. Getting the molds and tools to produce those kind of gadgets easily costs several ten thousand dollars. No idea how many they can sell, but you have to sell quite a view to return your investment.

And if what is being said in the latest is correct, it may be awhile before they can pay Apple the amount they need to make the product. A couple of other companies have paid Apple a royal ransom to make products for the gen 3. They could lose a bundle because of the simple little tool. Business wise it makes sense, but Apple would perhaps have been wiser to let out the connector for this. It is when they move to other uses for the iPod that the new docking connector will have it’s real use. Just MHO

but if you purchase a newer ipod you wont need this adapter because you have already sold your old ipod with all its accessories such as car charger. why would anyone keep their old ipods accessories if they bought a newer one.
