Sirius XM has announced plans to release a streaming audio application for the iPhone and iPod touch during the second quarter. The application will be available to both the company’s current 19 million subscribers and to all iPhone and iPod touch users. “This is a large and interesting opportunity that will maintain our subscription-based economics while providing customers easier access to our content through means other than our traditional satellite-based platform,” Sirius President of Operations and Sales Jim Meyer. Pricing and and exact release date for the application have yet to be set.

This is absolutely amazing, I have been waiting for this since I purchased my 3G iphone and found out that it did not stream Sirius, it just seems like a no-brainer since all of my colleagues that have Blackberry’s can listen all day long at the office.

This isn’t the first time Sirius has “announced” they would be releasing a streaming application for the iphone. The last time (2008) they announced their own in-house application it died internally of apathy. Why should we believe this announcement is anything more than a shallow attempt to deflect attention from their crushing the NiceMac developers and their uSirius application (which was already completed, fully functional, and about to be approved) in the Apple appstore?

Tried FSream? Great application for audio streaming. What’s also great with this application is the ability to record what your listening to. Will be looking out for the Sirius release also.
