Speck debuts Active Sport line of iPod cases

Speck Products today announced its new Active Sport line of fitness-inspired iPod cases. The new Active Sport Armband is made of a breathable mesh material and features a neoprene enclosure and an adjustable Velcro strap. The ActiveSport Case is a light-weight case with caribeener clip. Available for the fifth-generation iPod and iPod nano, both products feature clear screen protectors and reflective material for better night-time visibility. The Active Sport Armband ($35) is available immediately, while the Active Sport basic case ($25) will ship later this month.

It’s not a fact: the iPod’s hard drive is only accessed infrequently during playback, and is not affected by most sports. And obviously, the iPod nano has no hard drive.

And since there’s no audible or visual warning to alert you to an impending HDD access, you’re taking a chance by using it during rigorous physical activity. If you absolutely must use a HDD-based iPod during a workout, encode your music in low bitrates. The smaller file sizes allow you to squeeze more music into the buffer (decreasing the frequency that the drive needs to spin up to load more music).
