“Many observers believe Apple is more focused on launching the Windows version of iTunes in the US than it is on Europe. The company has committed to launching the Windows version before the end of the year. Jobs says: ‘We said (iTunes for Windows) would be out in the US next quarter, before the end of the year. I think we are very much on track.’
One record industry executive says: ‘Everyone wants to see what success they will have on Windows. If they can sell ten million songs on Macs, which have only 5 per cent of the PC market, how much could they sell to 100 per cent of the market?’”

Musclepup, if you look at there market share world wide, and consider that the notebook share is around 9% there overall share is around 5%

Is the guy that quote came from an idiot? Not every PC user uses windows and not every Mac user uses Mac OS so therefore they can’t possibly ever reach all of the market unles they develop for the many varieties of Unix and Unix based operating systems. Sorry I’m being nit-picky but at least it’s nit-picky about idiocy.

When I say that I mean both iTunes and MusicMatch (which is total crap and even windows users realize that I hated it and so does everyone else). The only thing MusicMatch is competent and decently quick at is ripping CDs….other than that it’s pure crap.

I use linux so don’t care about *any* of these services. But I do care that he thinks that MacOSX + Windows = 100% market share.

Musicmatch is crap at ripping CD’s, though the CDDB features are good. Use EAC or CDex with the LAME codec for decent quality

If you read slashdot all the time, you might think that Linux has significant market share. The truth is, Mac + Win is pretty close to 100% right now. No one but Apple would worry about reaching 5% of the market, and even fewer would worry about reaching the other 1-2% that are Linux users.

Long maligned as a desktop nonstarter, Linux should pass Apple in market share for desktop operating systems on computers sold in the coming year. That means from 7% to 10% of all PCs shipped won’t bear the Windows icon.

Hmm, I didn’t see those articles before. Still, if you believe the projections, that means Linux is expected to be anywhere from 2-6% of the market. Hardly something that would cause you to delay the launch of a new service.
Besides, Slashdot readers (I’m one myself) use OGG anyways!
