The sale of the iPhone began at midnight, with hundreds of people queueing in front of the stores. Two cell phone operators, Turkcell and Vodafone; offered the iPhone on the same day. The operators organized shows and promotions, including give-aways, to celebrate the start of the sale.
The Vodafone’s offer includes a 12-month contract; the total payment is a bit less than Turkcell’s but the included data transfer amount is 150 MB per month, opposed to Turkcell’s 3 GB. I think it’s quite good that people wanting to get the iPhone have a choice of 2 operators, instead of being stuck to a single one.
As mentioned in the article, the iPhone can be purchased contract-free with a payment over 5 months. I think these phones are SIM-locked to Turkcell, though. The 16 GB version is also offered contract-free; costing about 160 $ higher in total than the 8-GB one.
I would also like to note that the smallest 75 YTL offer doesn’t include a communication tax; with the tax the smallest offer becomes 90 YTL (approx. 73 $ / month). The total amount, including 18-month contact, is about 2.100 YTL ( 1.700 $). As I mentioned, the Vodafone offer costs a bit less.
Some people I have talked to complain that the official introduction was too late; since tens of thousands of iPhones have been somehow “imported” into Turkey. Still, I’m glad that the iPhone can finally be bought officially in Turkey, and hope to get my 16 GB one soon
