Universal Music may seek iPod royalty fee
Universal Music Group CEO Doug Morris said today that he may try to squeeze an iPod royalty fee from Apple in their next round of negotiations early next year. As reported earlier this month, Universal, the world’s largest music company, struck an agreement with Microsoft to receive a fee for every Zune digital media player sold. “It would be a nice idea. We have a negotiation coming up not too far. I don’t see why we wouldn’t do that… but maybe not in the same way,” Morris told the Reuters Media Summit, when asked about an iPod royalty fee. “The Zune (deal) was an amazingly interesting exercise, to end up with a piece of technology,” he added.

Seeing as how i don’t have a CD player, i only buy music to listen to on my iPod. if it weren’t for Apple, I wouldn’t buy any Universal Music at all. Perhaps Universal should start paying Apple $1.00 for every CD sold…

I work for a small monthly newspaper. Once our monthly issue is done, it is shipped out as a section of a larger daily newspaper. Out of thirty days of a month, one day has my paper in it. I should be paid a small amount for every newspaper the daily newspaper sells, regardless of whether or not my monthly paper is in that issue.
It’s a far fetched idea. I doubt that Apple will settle for their demands. Apple will not be the one to get the music off of the iTunes Store. Universal, if angry enough that Apple won’t comply with their demands, will probably voluntarily take their music off. I would like to see, though I won’t, Apple just program iTunes to reject the ripping of Universal CDs. Then give Universal a few years… We’ll see who’s begging for who to come back then.

I’ve bought more music since getting my iPod than I ever did before. I’m betting that I’m not the only one either. The labels are greedy and they pay the artists almost nothing. I recommend all you guys read this article:

I purchase all my CDs from eBay now, and support the artists by going to see them at live gigs.
